Crap like this is one of the reasons I work in the career I work in, and have hardly any loyalty to Corporate America. As soon as I see management does not give a crap about me, I am looking for elsewhere to work.
I hear you.
A chain grocery around here hires mentally disabled. They have a program where the more challenged have a handler that works with them for their first week. It is inspiring to see someone going out of their way to give these people skills and encourage them to excel.
I’ve seen several on their first day being withdrawn and unsure about simple tasks like bagging groceries.
A month later they are jamming along like anyone else.
Oh, and there is one guy that must be in his late 30’s who is autistic. He is more of a social basket case than the others but one thing he has that blows my mind is his knowledge of football. He can quote team and league statistics better than the production dept. of a network sports channel.
Thank you for saying that, thought I was going to get crapped on for speaking my peace on the American work environment.
👍
I've gone in stores with Downs employees and most are more efficient in their task than others as they don't stay distracted. She put in 16 years with good evaluations PLUS they said she could be rehired. Now why do you suppose they would want to make a 16 year employee start over as far as time being employed as in years employed? No retirement pay perhaps?
Walmart is getting crappy in many respects. They keep minimal lines with a cashier open and force walk in customers to use self check out or wait in a 6-8 customers long full buggy line. For the past week my local Walmart's precious self scan system has refused cash as payment.
Walmart is focusing on getting rid of walk in customers {she may have been a greeter} and going to on line shopping. They want to be a hybrid Amazon using a pick it up at the store type of deal. No customers in the stores means shoplifting reduction. Those idiots at any given store likely loose her hourly wage in just a few short minutes due to computer errors at the checkout.
Stores just three years ago before the automated system went into place were stocked and clean. My local one looks like a K-Mart did in their final years including poorly stocked and in need of a good cleaning. The on liners of course get their stuff and even shopped for and loaded into vehicle for free. We're talking about a company that thinks it's fine to send a customer with a cart load of groceries {several hundred dollars worth usually} to a self check out register where they will have a half dozen or more Opps gotta wait for employees to come clear the machine ordeal.
I've shopped in other stores where the cashiers were deaf. Again it was more efficient because she wasn't distracted.
The woman Walmart fired said she also needed to eat at a certain time or get sick. Some persons have what is called Hypoglycemia which isn't as such meaning she is Diabetic. My Mom had it a non Diabetic and if she went too long without eating sometimes she passed out.
I think they canned this woman to save money in retirement and to likely focus on their beloved on line shopping and at store pick up.
Her 16 years of good evals tells me there's a rotten fish in the home offices. Perhaps a corporate management efficiency expert {cough cough} just paid a visit. Store managers at Walmart have very little say in how the store is ran. I mean their computer schedules employees hours? Seriously? Walmart is it's own worst enemy but corp is too stupid to see it.
She should get $300K which means she will get $200K for herself. Honestly though she should get $300K allowed in this case and Walmart pay legal cost.
I will say that I absolutely commend employers who accommodate people with cognitive disabilities. My local grocer, King Soopers, obviously employs some workers with cognitive disabilities. They don't advertise it and get no publicity for it, but I notice it.
I raised four kids. Some needed special services. But all are today very happy, healthy and responsible adults supporting themselves. I thank my lucky stars I never had a child with a profound disability. I would hope that there are employers out there who who'd give them a hand up. Good for you King Soopers. Shame on you, Walmart.
