I’ve heard people talk about buying “merch” when they mean merchandise. And talk of “vacay”, when they mean vacation.
It makes me think some people are talking in text message abbreviations.
I’ve even heard someone say out loud, LOL, as they laughed at something.

This has been going on in Australia for 50 years now.
Servo = Service Station (gas plus food/drinks)
Maccos = McDonalds
Strine = Austalian
Arvo = Afternoon
Sanger = Sandwich
Chook = chicken
It was a culture shock for me when I was there. Same language, but everybody talking it and I didn’t understand!
