SF Bay Area restaurants are still struggling. Returning customers don't see that.

At Vanessa’s Bistro in Berkeley, owner Vi Nguyen recently encountered a customer who stood in her kitchen doorway to yell at her after a server made a simple mistake.

“Not talk, yell,” Nguyen emphasized, sounding increasingly exasperated as she told the story. “This was the beginning of the reopening, and we had a line of takeout orders. Her husband stood at the doorway and was like, ‘She's hungry! She needs her food right now!’”

This wasn’t an isolated incident for Nguyen. Since California’s June 15 reopening of the economy, customers have gotten … a little difficult. Well, a lot difficult.

Nguyen said it’s gotten so bad, she’s even had to 86 some regulars (restaurant slang for banning or throwing out a customer).

“One gentleman yelled at my server, ‘I don't understand why you guys don’t have more tables out here’ … because they didn't want to wait for the table. They were just super rude,” said Nguyen. “Where exactly do you want me to put all of these extra tables? In the road, where the cars drive?”

When the customer attempted to return to Vanessa’s Bistro soon after, she asked him to leave.

“People who were already nice prior to the pandemic are super nice, and people who were a little bit difficult to deal with pre-pandemic are now completely just unbearable to even serve,” she said.

Folks, I know there's not a large census of servers here on FR, but I truly hope none (or very few) of us are the kind of d-heads that have no concept of others having issues, emotions, and stresses upon them.

I believe that we don't go out and try to abuse people who are there to facilitate a good experience and have no recognition for the struggles of those in the hospitality industry.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this is incredibly prevalent in liberal pockets of Our Country. Hate done by liberals, to liberals, for liberals.

San Francisco, mired in liberalism, is showing it true colors: A crappy hell hole.

A lot more spoiled psychos out there now.

I don’t believe in treating people so poorly.

Firm believer in what goes around comes around.

Last few weeks, I’ve checked out websites of eateries (to check hours, etc.) You would not believe the reviews being dropped - people irate about slow service, limited menus, etc.

These places cannot get workers, are struggling financially, and I bet dollars to donuts these reviewers were all for the lockdowns and whatnot. They have no ability to connect their politics with the fact they’re not getting the red carpet treatment they think they have coming to them wherever they deign to show up.

I’d be a complete failure in a retail or restaurant setting. The first time someone talked smack to me I’d tell them to get the hell out and don’t come back.

The Karen is hungry! Attend! Feed now!

First, if the majority voted for this **** then Deep State wouldn’t have to steal elections.

Second, I don’t think most folks expect cadillac service. They just want value for money. All they know is that they’re not getting it.

Also, many like me may remember that very few of these businesses tried to fight Deep State. All of the ones I know still in biz took the money and dummied up. I have zero sympathy for them.

I do NOT excuse bad behavior by customers.

My response when faced with this stuff: I don’t eat out. If they can’t fight for their own futures, I’m not giving them my money.

Fortunately for me, I’m a really good cook.

My kind of FReepers.

My two next door neighbors are both bartenders, and to see them suffer through the last 15 or so months, not having a livelihood, missing the human interaction, and routine to keep them organized, regimented humans, was tragic. To see them come back to the industry and face abuse by entitled liberals is heart-breaking.

A precondition for being a Leftist useless idiot is to have a juvenile temperament.

This is why you see this kind of juvenile behavior in areas rich in Leftist useless idiots.

Yep. They quit maturing along about eighth grade. At that stage, it was “all about me!” Psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually stunted they are.

I have been hearing similar stories in different places about shortage of labor as no one wants to work anymore as the government pays them to stay home. All I can say is that I see a very bad ending, as this crap just can’t continue. And whatever eventually will happen to set things back on course will not be pretty, at least this is my hunch.

I pretty much feel that way about everything these days. Folks weaned on the teet of the GOV, demanding it to continue, raping money from those who saved and invested, taking our property from us, in the name of "reconcilliation"/"fairness"/"justice", etc.

And I was a long time, hard-core optimist.

Looking forward to the End Times.

I tell my kids, don’t mess with the food preparers or servers until AFTER you get your food. You never know these days.

Two of my kids have second jobs as food servers. The other works at the customer service desk of a large box store. I was always nice to servers, and to a degree folks working in the big stores.

Seeing my kids I doubled being nice to them. During Covid it was (and still is) triple.

The other week my wife tried the steak at a chain restaurant. It had been tough when we ordered take out, but maybe it was due to reheating it? Nope - still real tough. Probably getting a cheaper cut trying to save money during covid.

Told the waiter (our regular) about it. “Okay - so obviously it isn’t you, but the steak has been really tough for awhile. I don’t know if there is anything you can do - but if other customers ask for recommendations, the steak ain’t it!”

He said he would look into it.

I saw a woman on Twitter blame Trump for all the rude customers in the SF Bay Area, in response to this article. I kid you not.

Wife and I still eat out at least once a week (Casino town with good prices). I was always a good tipper, but these days I go a bit more - in thanks for the server showing up when she could sit at home and probably make as much.

Masks have come off but they may be re-implemented (Nevada). I tell the girls it’s such a pleasure to see a smiling face again and am always rewarded with a nicer one.

Seems to be common in retail right now. Can’t get workers and the Karens complain. When the pandemic began people were stressed out so on edge but why is that cycling back? Why take these things out on people who show up to work and doing their best with limited staff and, at times, no corporate support?
