Reeducation centers were basically in all Communist countries one time or other.
Vietnam and Cambodia used to have a really bad ones.

The reason for re-education was that the Communist, just like today’s leftists, did univocally believed in their theories.
Marx and Lenin writings were like Torah to them, every letter was the Truth.
Students learned the writings in schools.
As such, anybody who disagreed with them was basically an idiot, mentally ill, misinformed, heretic or corrupt enemy, agent of the imperialists.
They were staying in the way of progress! Trying to remove the paradise for everybody else!
Re-educating them in the proper way of thinking was the best way to return them to the proper path. They were actually doing them a favor.
If they refused to be re-educated, then they had to be dealt in the harshest way.
