Cargo Ship Gets Kicked Out of U.S. Waters After Discovery of Invasive Insects

U.S. Customs and Border Protection ordered a Panama-flagged bulk carrier to immediately depart U.S. waters earlier this month after the discovery of invasive insects on board.

CBP says the M/V Pan Jasmine arrived at an anchorage down river from New Orleans on July 17th, arriving from Paradip, India via Vera Cruz, Mexico.

An initial inspection of the vessel raised some red flags after it was discovered that the wood used secure a previous cargo of aluminum, known as “dunnage”, was left scatted on the deck, rather than offloaded in Mexico. This prompted a closer inspection by CBP and USDA personnel who discovered five separate pests, including two species (namely Cerambycidae, a type of beetle, and Myrmicinae, colonizing queen ants) that are known to pose a major agriculture threat to the U.S.

Due to the large volume of dunnage and the presence of the pests, the vessel was ordered to immediately depart U.S. waters, load the dunnage into the cargo hold and clean the decks prior to returning to the U.S. The Pan Jasmine departed on July 21st to Freeport, Bahamas, for dunnage disposal services.

The Emerald Ash Borer, which has killed millions upon millions of ash trees in Michigan and neighboring states over the last 15-20 years, is of the Cerambycidae family.

Well known among Michiganders to have arrived in wood used to pack machine tools shipped from China to customers on the Detroit area.

China is either shamelessly corrupt, or is conducting a slow form of biowarfare against the US of A. Or both.

Sounds like the opening scene of a 1950s "giant-insect invasion movie"

Well, the release of the Emerald Ash Borer was wholly accidental.

What happened was that an ash tree was cut in rural China, trucked to a sawmill, rough sawn, planed, stacked, shipped to the tool factory, re-stacked, held in storage, made into a crate, shipped to a sea port, loaded on a ship, crossed the Pacific Ocean, transited the Panama Canal, traveled up the east coast to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, sailed up the St. Lawrence Seaway to Detroit and was unloaded and trucked to a destination in rural Michigan all before the wood dried out.

Don't you see?

Excellent B movie. Not much research done, at that time, into massive insect bodies metabolic requirements and structural strength needed to support such an insects weight...but not bad a movie. Update it with dog sized ants and watch the forMication ensue. Yeah forMication.

Fess Parker had a small role as "Crazy Texan Pilot" who saw the ants but nobody believes him. Just one scene, but the acting was impressive.

Walt Disney screened the movie to look at James Arness as a possible Davey Crockett but was so impressed by Parker, he got the role.

Of course, starring in one of the longest running TV shows of all time was a nice consolation prize for Arness.

It's even worse. Anyone crossing the southern border illegally is a "refugee" and admitted. But, anyone from Cuba who is a real refugee fleeing a communist dictatorship is not qualified to be a "refugee" and will not be allowed to cross by the Coast Guard.

It’s unbelievable what foreigners try to bring into the USA. Watch a few videos of our port of entries and you’ll be stunned what they bring in.
