You couldn't be more wrong about Columbo if you tried. In the very first episode he explained the secret of his success. He said that for most of the people he investigates it's their only murder while he does this 100 times a year so it's a lot easier for him to catch mistakes than it is for them to avoid making them.
There never were 100 episodes of Columbo per year so the viewer only gets to see the ones with the heiress and the oceanside mansion. Whoever was producing the show decided that plumbers, mechanics and other working stiffs fit right in to Columbo's walk of life but when he was among the wealthy it created a fish out of the water atmosphere with this working stiff detective in the beat up old car working around the mansions and the chauffeured limousines.
And yet, both of his shots were defective.
Looks like Patty Hearst.
Remarkable that Doris could walk after a romantic evening.
