Basketball Hall of Famer and Alabama native Charles Barkley will headline a COVID vaccine rally at Legion Field later this month.
Barkley will be the featured speaker at a vaccine rally, hosted by the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center on Aug. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will feature drive-thru and walk-up vaccinations at no cost, as well as free t-shirts to the first 300 people vaccinated and food trucks available to purchase from.
Barkley plugged the event during an appearance Thursday on The Next Round sports talk show with Jim Dunaway, Ryan Brown and Lance Taylor.
“Next Saturday at Legion Field, I can’t believe I’m going back to Legion Field,” said Barkley, who played basketball at Auburn and frequently attends the Iron Bowl. “I’m looking forward to it.
“We’ve got food trucks too,” Barkley said. “We’ve got to feed people to get them to take the vaccine. What the hell’s going on?”
Barkley, always known as a colorful interview who doesn’t hold back, blamed unvaccinated and mask-averse people for skipping his usual post-NBA playoffs vacation this year.
“Most of the fun places are locked down because of COVID,” Barkley said. “And you’ve got these idiots out here who don’t want to take the vaccine and who don’t want to wear a mask, and they’re out here getting people sick and killing people all over the country, and some of these countries won’t let you go there.”
Barkley, who is also a basketball commentator for TNT, said he’s spent his last two summers playing golf instead of traveling.
“You know, I got screwed last summer because of the [NBA playoff] bubble,” Barkley said. “This summer, I’m just getting screwed by dummies who won’t get the vaccine and won’t wear their masks so we can get this thing under control and get back to normal.”

For those that want to play Nostradamus, follow Israel, they were the first to vaccinate. It isn’t working as advertised, focus should be on therapeutics that you take when you get sick. Not everyone getting injected on a regular basis.
