If my platoon was one minute late on its mission time on a tac eval, we received a failing grade.

Then again, I was 30 minutes early for a mission, and I got my ass chewed out by the team chief from the DA evaluation team. There I was, getting into it with a LT Col, while I was a 1st LT. I tole him my soldiers needed extra time for training, for a mission that was outside of their usual duties.

On the following day, I would enjoy one of my best moments in an otherwise undistinguished (lol) military career. After the team left, the Deputy CG, BG Archie Cannon strode to the lectern for his remarks. First thing he did was point at me and say, "LT, I'll take the hit for the extra training. Anytime you want to give your soldiers extra training, you have my express permission."

Damn, that felt good...lol
