On Thursday morning, a collared female mountain lion named P-54 was near Calabasas, California, with two of her cubs. Born in October, the two young mountain lions were at an age when they're learning to hunt on their own in preparation for taking care of themselves and becoming adults.
On that morning, though, one of the young lions set its sights on a 5-year-old boy playing in his front yard, and it attacked.
"On Aug 26, 2021, approximately 10:45 a.m., a 65-lb. mountain lion attacked the boy in his front yard, inflicting wounds to his head, neck and upper torso," the California Department of Fish and Wildlife shared in a news release.
Patrick Foy, a spokesman for the CDFW, said that after attacking the boy, the lion "dragged him about 45 yards," according to KCAL-TV.
But there was another mother nearby: the boy's mother. She heard her son screaming and did what she had to to save him.
"The commotion caused by the attack and the boy’s screaming alerted the mom who was inside," Foy continued. "She ran out and immediately started striking and punching at the lion and managed to fend the lion off of her son."
The mountain lion released the boy and wandered away, but stayed close. The boy's parents took the 5-year-old to the hospital, where he is thankfully reported as being in stable condition.

Cute kitties and bear cubs and badger babies and wolf pups and coyote younguns. NOT. And, with the fires raging in the Lake Tahoe area, the wildlife is going to be moving fast and into areas they aren't usually found.
Such racism! The burned areas become all black and the lighter colored animals move away from those areas. And only because the areas are now black! This is the racism of white flight at its worst.
I guess P-54 is not a good fit for polite company, much like conservatives today.
It will meet the same fate that the Left is trying to mete out to us.
That happened here when we had a bad fire in the high country years ago. Bears were everywhere. I’d rather deal with them than a commie any day.

If that gets a “yikes” from you , you don’t know who animal rights wackos are.
They are people who don’t mind humans dying because they adhere to a religion that believes that wild animals are sacred and humans are profane. That also means they encourage the extinction of domestic animals.
Sometimes you can reason with a bear. LOL!

Oh, I know. Sort of like the ‘authorities’ not minding a few folks dying from THE vax. Sometimes you gotta break a few eggs. Surprised they didn’t try to have the mom charged with harming the kitten that was just doing what animals do.
Two contrary forces are at work.
On the one hand: No one any longer hunts the small critters that mountain lions feed on. If they did not have food (prey) they’d not mate and have cups.
Then again: Human settlement in S. California keeps expanding into previous unsettled areas and that does cut into the population of small critters mountain lions feed on.
So, mountain lions are expanding (from about 2,000 in the 1970s to between 4,000 and 6,000 today) at the same time their areas are being further built into by human settlement.
Isn’t the decline of hunting wonderful???

When hiking south of Pocatello, it is a good idea to have a good sidearm. Mountain lions and black bears are common as well as coyotes. Going east toward Soda Springs, add wolves and grizzlies to the mix.
I read a story in Readers Digest many years ago that was similar. A cougar grab the boy and took him into the brush and the mother ran after and rescued her kid.
