U.S. Democrats propose dramatic expansion of EV tax credits that favors Big Three

U.S. Democratic lawmakers on Friday proposed an expansion of tax credits for electric vehicles that includes significantly higher subsidies for union-made zero emission models assembled in the United States.

The proposal, a key part of President Joe Biden's goal to ensure EVs comprise at least 50% of U.S. vehicle sales by 2030 and boost U.S. union jobs, will give Detroit's Big Three automakers a big competitive edge and has drawn criticism from foreign automakers like Honda Motor Co and Toyota Motor Corp.

The tax credit for up to $12,500 per vehicle for U.S.-made union-made zero emission models compares with a $7,500 incentive for most other electric cars - an amount that has not changed.

The bill, however, does away with phasing out automakers' tax credits after they hit 200,000 electric vehicles sold, which would make General Motors Co and Tesla Inc eligible again. It would also create a new smaller credit for used EVs of up to $2,500.

When Wired took a look at this in 2019, the magazine said an EV would drive 20% fewer miles on average in the cold versus warmer temperatures. A study from AAA and the aforementioned one from Consumer Reports were much more dire; AAA set the average decrease at 41%, and CR showed evidence of about 50% loss.

How about giving us E-vehicles that work in the first place?

Like a hybrid. Hybrids half transportation costs for commuters by allowing them to fill just once a month, based on average commuting times and distances.

I wasn’t aware of the decreased range in cold weather until recently. This seems like a major issue. It also means that the amount of energy that needs to be generated to keep these vehicles charged will be substantially more in the winter. It seems as though so little of this is ever fully thought through.

How many miles do Norwegians drive on average? Per Statistisk Sentralbyra, or Statistics Norway, Norwegians drove an average of 12,289 km in 2015, or 7,636 miles per year. This translates to an average of 21 miles a day, or about 57% of the average US daily mileage.

Northern Europeans are hopelessly wedded to their liberal philosophies, even to the point of societal destruction. They are idiots.

No tax credits. Period. Let the market decide if people want to buy these golf carts.

The electric car gives you a choice in winter: get home, or stay warm. Pick one.

Folks, the big issue here isn’t the tax credit. The issue is that it only goes to cars made in a union shop. This is an unbelievable attempted power grab.
RESIST.

EVs are a fraud and swindle foisted on credulous fools who believe that
  1. they’re not polluting (burning coal is not considered polluting if it’s in a power plant 50 miles away)
  2. global warming exists and is caused by SUVs.
  3. Absurd mileage and efficiency claims for batteries. (A 100 KW battery has the same energy as 3 gallons of gasoline - figure out how far you can go on that).
  4. battery technology/motor efficiency will improve to the point where it is comparable to gasoline. (Take a course in physical chemistry that explores the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics to see why this is impossible).
. What irritates me are the FR Dunning Kruger club members who lie about relative efficiencies to push a product that almost no one would but if it weren’t for the tax incentives. Let the purchase price reflect the true price and you’d see just how many people actually wanted them.

This beautiful vehicle can be yours for the incredibly low price of $24,000 after $30,000 in government subsidies. What a deal!

I recently learned that fast charging any battery significantly shortens the overall life of the battery. So, even if there comes a day when there are more fast charging stations available, those car battery systems will need replacement more often. And now, some EV makers are warning the customers not to charge the EV inside the garage, due to the fire hazard risk. Lovely, just lovely.

One of my favorite ‘Tesla’ stories was from some time spent in La Quinta, near Palm Springs. There are long, long streets, and you have to go aways to get anywhere. We witnessed a Tesla driving with ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN. It was 110 degrees outside, and this ‘wonderful’ electric car was driving very fast, with all the windows down. I finally realized what must have been happening. If they were ‘low’ on energy, they could not turn on the air conditioning. It would use up too much energy and the car would have stopped. With a gasoline powered car, one can literally ‘pour’ energy into the car by filling up with gasoline. Not so with electric cars. What I did not know is that fast charging shortens the lifetime of the battery.

Trump proved we can drill our way to energy independence. There are vast oceans of hydrocarbons on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Yes, hydrocarbons, not ‘fossil fuels.’ It is a natural substance, and we keep discovering more and more here on Earth. One of the many scams from the left was Peak Oil. Before fracking exploded, ‘they’ would tell us we only have so much oil, coal, natural gas. We now have more natural gas than Saudi Arabia. We were exporting ships of LNG around the world.

So...the credit goes to companies which discriminate against those who are not political allies of the Democrat party? With government funds?
