Surrounded by corn/soybean/ used to be tobacco, endives, etc....
The Feds have been controlling acreage and crop presentation since the 1930’s through a variety of programs to limit oversupply, improve quality, control disease,provide charity to lazy ass bastards with lots of land....etc

That said, farmers...especially of perishable foods like found in the Fresh Section of supermarkets will often destroy crops if the are too long in the field, have exceeded their water allotment, get a blight, or their production exceeds their crop insurance amount..
Lesser so in dairy as it can keep a few weeks....but get lister in a dairy operation and all the milk is dumped
Hoof and mouth.....and the cow herds are slaughtered in a big pit with rifles and buried.
If your affected herd runs against a fence with an adjoining herd.....they are composted as well.
The farm can’t be used for animals then for years depending on the disease.
Nothing can be known with only topical data points or anecdotes....everything is complicated.
A quick Duck-Duck search revealed that this particular scam goes out EVERY year, late summer, involving some ‘crop’ or another. I found articles going back to 2016.

Here in NH you can go in the stores to find empty shelves. Talk to the workers and they’ll tell you it’s not because of more shoppers or hoarding, it’s because they can’t get enough of certain products. It may be a worker shortage on the supply end. I don’t know, but I’m wary of a government that mandates an untested drug, tells us there are no illegal immigrants at the border and they’ve sent them home, and the myriad of other lies they’ve been feeding us.
The danger is that we’re being desensitized to real SHTF flags.
Very true. I’m not saying hard times aren’t ahead of us if the Socialists currently occupying our Government have their way; they’re just not here ‘quite’ yet, so there’s still time to plan ahead. :)

Anyone, anywhere in this country wants to see crops destroyed simply has to look at CA.
They’ve cut off all irrigation water for farms there.
So, the farmers are drilling wells. And now the ground water level is dropping causing the ground levels to drop.
