It seems a fair number of the Birchers "loony conspiracy theories" have been shown to be mostly correct, in the main.
One Worlders working hard to get rid of US sovereignity and institute a world government. check.
Top people in the US government working against the interests of the United States. check.
Wealthy people around the world working in concert to diminish the US. check.
The US government working to indoctrinate US children against the Constitution and American values. check.
Remember the "Birchers" were heavily infiltrated by FBI types, who worked to discredit them.
I kept my subscription for a few years after Mr. Buckley passed away but it quickly became apparent that Lowry and Goldberg were intent on turning the once proud National Review into a soapbox for the Bush-Kasich-Christie brand of “conservative”. They alienated their core readership.
He seemingly desired to be civil and keep the Democrats as “the loyal opposition”. He persisted in this belief even as Dems sabotaged and abused Republicans.
I thought they were still there and Goldberg was one of the executives.
A RINO, by any other name...
And THAT is part of how I know the 2020 election was bunk: a spate of mean tweets simply WOULD NEVER be grounds for good, common folks to jettison the ONE GUY who never played them for saps, or treated them as mere vote fodder. VDH noted, Trump campaigned in the sweltering Central Valley of California in a black suit in 105-degree weather; THAT’S a guy who’s genuine, and in TOTAL contrast to ALL Democrat — and most Republican — candidates since at least Mondale, who was simply genuinely flaccid.
You CANNOT credibly argue that the one guy who stuck to his guns and consistently, unflinchingly spoke up for America — the type of for-real President and leader that Americans had been GASPING for since Reagan left office — LOST votes for sticking to his guns and consistently, unflinchingly speaking up for America.
That DEFIES all Logic and Reason. It simply DID. NOT. HAPPEN.
Trump lost because the DNC drones orchestrated county-level voter fraud around the country, and the Assistant DNC RINOs looked — and are STILL looking — the other way.
I’m EVER so glad there’s a Hell.
Always hated David French, unfortunately I was fooled by Goldberg for longer than I should’ve been. Much wiser now.
bkmk
2. NR = neither are relevant!!!
Ahem. Buckley’s self admitted bigest influence was James Burnham an early Communist; later a Trotskyite (and Trotsky’s friend), later a Conservative.
He and around three others of similar backgrounds joined the N.R and influenced WFB and the direction of the “conservatives”.
But, Burnham wrote the Managerial Revolution and although he did not forcefully push it as an ideal, somehow underneath that Fascist form of control and tyranny is with us today canceling everything tinged with true Conservatism and Populism.
George Orwell wrote and Essay available online “Second Thoughts on James Burnham”.
Therefore, the messages of small government, limited government power, term limits, personal freedoms and self-determination of the citizenry, AND the concept that those in office are employees of the citizenry doesn't sit well with either the left (who live for government power and control) or those in office on the right - who want to hold on to and grow their own power and stature.
I short, you can NEVER trust a politician to limit their own reach and power - no matter what political accoutrements they adorn themselves with.
My cousin Rolla was a Bircher, and a bank president, and a WWII tank battalion commander. He was not nuts, he was not looney, and he knew something about the way of the world. He never told me anything that was not absolutely true.
I washed my hands of NR entirely after Covington.
The JBS types I knew in my youth were generally, in my opinion, well intentioned, and absolutely correct about the “big issues”, especially the unreconstructed evilness of the Red Chinese regime.
But you couldn’t simply agree with them about China, or Earl Warren, or the UN. You had to buy in to the crazy stuff, as well. I don’t know if it was just the people I knew, or if it was a tendency of the group as a whole, but it didn’t help them with their broader political agenda.
#4: 100% accurate.
National Review Republicans
I liked Sobran; he did brief radio commentary for a while. I think he passes away relatively young about 15 years ago.
Wikipedia (YMMV) says 2010. Sobran.com remains.
(One I like pointing folks to: Joe Sobran, The Reluctant Anarchist
“The Birchers were the home of loony conspiracy theories. I think they believed that Nixon was secretly an agent of the Soviet Union IIRC.”
It’s weird. Nixon did end up being a Communust regime agent, kind of.
Kissinger is literally an agent for them.
Kevin Williams wasn’t sufficiently pro abortion for the Atlantic, so his MAGA hating self was welcomed back.
👌😂

True. Americans were lectured by the media to hate John Birch and Joseph McCarthy because they were speaking the truth. Time has played out and we can see it clearly now.
