He transitioned from print to television thanks, in part, to a shoulder tap by MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow.
In 2011, Hayes began regularly filling in for “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell and impressed management.
He says he would never have been a host if it hadn’t been for Maddow.
