‘Makes No Sense’: Southwest Airlines Says It Won’t Fire Workers Who Don’t Get COVID Vaccine

Southwest Airlines’ CEO said the company will not fire employees who do not get the COVID-19 vaccine by Dec. 9 following a Biden administration mandate that was announced last month for federal contractors.

In a statement to news outlets Friday, the Dallas-based carrier confirmed to Fox News it does not want to “lose any employee” over President Joe Biden’s mandate, adding that firing a worker over the vaccine “makes no sense.” It came a day after Southwest CEO Gary Kelly made a similar announcement during an earnings call.

“This is an evolving process working with the government in terms of what they expect, and very clearly, we wanted our employees to know that nobody is going to lose their job on December the 9th if we’re not perfectly in compliance,” Kelly said, according to news reports. The Epoch Times has contacted Southwest for comment.

My company is starting to "walk back" this ridiculous "mandate".

Otherwise they would have had to fire about 40% of their workers. Including me.

We were on a SWA flight 68 hrs ago. When the plane nosed up to the concourse in Denver, there was nobody in a yellow vest who could operate the jetway tunnel to mate it with the plane door.

We waited half an hour for a man to arrive. The pilot apologized profusely and frequently.

Many big companies that are labor intensive are balking at the vaccine mandates. It's one thing for Southwest to threaten to fire pilots, they know that most guys making $200,000+ will give in and get the vaccine to preserve their job. Southwest has a lot of gate agents, flight attendants, and baggage handlers making a lot less than that who will say "fugg it" and quit before taking the vaccine. These people have a lot less to lose by refusing the vaccine and Southwest knows it. Their operation will grind to a halt if suddenly they fire 20% of their workforce.

A lot of hospitals have gotten themselves into huge binds by firing workers who refuse to get vaccinated. Hospital administrators who a month ago thought they were going to be hailed as heroes are now having to explain to their boards why they've taken actions that are financially ruining them. Other companies are watching and have come to the conclusion that mass firings of critical employees when workers are scarce already could destroy their profits. Always follow the money. Leftist virtue signaling plays well until it costs them a bunch of money, then it quietly gets dropped.
