Nursing has had staffing shortages long before COVID-19. I have a friend that is a professor in a a college RN program. They start new cohorts every Spring and Fall, and have been doing that for 10+ years. Every cohort is full and there’s still a waiting list. She told me lately that a majority of graduating students are leaving the state to go elsewhere for better pay, benefits, etc.

That’s not going to happen in Nursing. The amount of academic work to be an RN is substantial. For two-year programs, almost all students complete general ed and other non-Nursing courses first so they can focus solely on Nursing courses, clinical, etc the last two years. The majority of students are female, with children, so they are juggling several plates. Lots of people have done it / do it, but it’s not easy.

Yep, there are tens of thousands of highly-qualified Haitian professionals assembled at our southern border, just waiting to step into those elite health-care jobs!
