The latest version of the Build Back Better Act, one of the centerpieces of President Joe Biden’s economic and social agenda, includes a tax credit for local outlets for employing journalists.
Lawmakers in the House and the Senate have introduced bills to try to boost struggling local newspapers and broadcast outlets.
Under the text of the bill released Wednesday, per Punchbowl News, employers would get a credit against employment taxes for local news journalists. It would provide a credit up to $25,000 to defray employment taxes in the first year, and $15,000 in the next four years, for each employee. That would cover 50% of compensation up to $50,000 in the first year and 30% in the next four years.
The language defines local news journalist as someone who works not less than 30 hours a week and who lives within 50 miles of the outlet’s local community. It would apply to print and digital publications, as well as broadcast stations.

What a terrible way to keep evil employed, when the rest of us are actively helping their needed demise.
Can I collect the credit for hiring them to mow my lawn? I don’t think they’re capable of anything more complicated than that (and not sure they can even handle mowing).
So this is what we have, Political advertising is payola for broadcast stations (I won’t go into the rules but it is a humongous cash cow for the Hedge Funds who now own most broadcast outlets) and now they get tax credits for employing their “reporting” staff. But if you have $600 in your bank account they are going to watch everything you do!
I think the folks here on FR should call themselves “journalists” and start collecting a pile of cash for themselves.
I might also give some of the female “journalists” a job cleaning my house, so long as they did it while wearing lingerie. Don’t look at me like that….I’m just trying to think of jobs that match their demonstrated skills.
What a brilliant and evil idea.
Since the Media is already on the Democrat, subsidize so that they can spread more Democrat propaganda.

But still can’t film the police in many places.
This is a huge wealth transfer to the big media corporations.
Local news outlets are almost all owned by big national or international media corporations.
The internet has all but killed local news. All but a few local news papers have gone bankrupt or been swallowed up by the big media conglomerates.
So, Big Media is getting subsidized by the government.
What happens when the government subsidizes an industry? They surrender their freedom.
Freedom of the press is about to be murdered.
Morons.
“ Another provision of the legislation would allow for producers to deduct 100% of the costs of producing sound recordings in the U.S. in the year in which the expenses are incurred. Essentially, this would add sound recordings to Section 181 of the tax code, which allows for such expensing for movie and TV production, as well as live theatrical production. The expense deduction is capped at $150,000.”
Heck, I “produce” music all of the time. Another $150K in gear would be nice.
But is it Constitutional or right? Hail no.
