Facebook on Thursday announced that it has changed its company name to Meta.
The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference. The new name reflects the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media. Facebook, now known as Meta, has adopted the new moniker, based on the sci-fi term metaverse, to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual world.
“Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
The company also said in announcing the new name that it will change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, effective Dec. 1.
Meta’s stock price closed up on Thursday.
In July, the company announced the formation of a team that would work on the metaverse. Two months later, the company said it would elevate Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, who is currently the head of the company’s hardware division, to the role of chief technology officer in 2022. And in its third-quarter earnings results on Monday, the company announced that it will break out Reality Labs, its hardware division, into its own reporting segment, starting in the fourth quarter.
“Our hope is that within the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter on Thursday.
Over the past few years, the company has ramped up its efforts in hardware, introducing a line of Portal video-calling devices, launching the Ray-Ban Stories glasses and rolling out various versions of the Oculus virtual-reality headsets.

Virtual Reality basically means one is removing oneself from reality. Blech.
The trade name Facebook is embedded into the culture in countless ways. It’s going to be a long period of ‘updating those Street Signs everywhere you look online.
The Icons must also be replaced on packaging and in print.
I don’t see why the corporate name Meta couldn’t have just been added as a central reference, but hey, are they asking for my opinion on it? No, they are not.
Shoulda made their own parent company, like Google did.
Opposite of Meta is Mesa. Guess I’ll remain a Mesa girl. FaceMeta sux.
Meta is the Hebrew word for death.
I think they were thinking of Greek instead of Hebrew.
From the Greek μετα-, meta-, meaning “after” or “beyond”, “more comprehensive” or “transcending.”
Could care less about the name change. It will always be Facebook to me.

Facebook seeks to cleanse itself but this won’t do it just as I can change my name to Obama but it won’t make me half black or married to a man dressed like a woman. At times we instantly want to believe the other side is stupid (and it is tempting here), but they are actually insidious monsters aiding communist China. I saw an article conflating the two, “The Latest Data Makes the Vaccine Mandate Push Seem All the More Stupid”, and you can give that a look at RedState. So since these ‘vaccines’ obviously don’t have a real effect on the virus the next thing to consider is what their real purpose is. Mark can call his company whatever he wants but I’m still boycotting it.
