Days after it was dropped from the House version of the budget bill, a tax credit to help pay the salaries of local journalists is back in. The measure still needs to win inclusion in the Senate’s version and survive any further reduction of the $1.75 trillion target total. Still, the move represents a big improvement in prospects for the subsidy.
Steven Waldman, president and co-founder of Report for America, and Dean Ridings, CEO of industry association America’s Newspapers, both credited the turnaround to publishers and owners communicating the severity of the financial crisis in local news to their representatives.
The credit would pay half the salary of journalists up to $50,000 for the year after it passes, 30% for four years after that. A rough estimate of the price tag is $1 billion the first year.

This will never be got rid of, and will expand and expand. The “Free Press” will become just another government agency.
If I write and post local news here on FR can I get a piece of the pie?
Putting another segment on the government dole to make sure they continue to obey!
.
Of course it is.
Perhaps, as a government-certified troll. I think this support will be content-dependent.
These are the Assistant Democrats that made all of this possible
Dan Sullivan (R-AK) Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) Mike Crapo (R-ID) Roy Blunt (R-MO) Richard Burr (R-NC) Deb Fischer (R-NE) Lindsey Graham (R-SC) Rob Portman (R-OH) Thom Tillis (R-NC) Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) Jim Risch (R-ID) Chuck Grassley (R-IA) Bill Cassidy (R-LA) Kevin Cramer (R-ND) Roger Wicker (R-MS) Mitch McConnell (R-KY) John Hoeven (R-ND) Susan Collins (R-ME) Mitt Romney (R-UT)
Plus these Assistant Democrats in the House: Van Drew, Katko, Bacon, YoungAK, Upton, Kinzinger, SmithNJ, Fitzpatrick, Reed, Gabarino, GonzalezOH, McKinley.
The Democrats needed GOP help and they got it.
.
Tell us how much Joe has spent per day since he crawled in.
.
We can only blame Mitch so much. After all, the GOP senators are the ones who keep him in his position.
But keep voting GOP folks. Maybe one day they’ll do something for us. LOL
I think they do this in China and Russia...
All media will now will be state-funded, and so state-controlled, organs. No way to get around it.
Journalist on the government payroll. A little honesty for once is kind of refreshing I think.
What could possibly go wrong !
Hey why not add payments to blm and antifAmerica while they are at it:-|
The government paying “journalists”. What could go wrong?
Just look at PBS & NPR.
That has worked well for the Marxists.
Shades of Soviet era news.
“There is no pravda in Izvestia, and no izvestia in Pravda.”
This is how the “4th Estate” becomes part of the government ‘infrastructure’ and it is as ugly as it sounds!
The term “4th Estate” derives from Europe and the time preceding the French Revolution. The 1st through 3rd ‘Estates’ were the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners and recognized how each shares common interests AND conflicts with the others. The Press were a new creature, less tied to the old structures and thus a reasonable reporter of the actions of these others.
Now the MSM (Press & Media) will/would be subsidized by the government dollar taken from taxpayers. No matter what the restrictions, this is a bad idea!
Maybe this isn’t so bad after all. If journalists can be singled out for a special tax credit they can be singled out for a special tax. Down the road, under a sane administration, journalists could be taxed by the word, say $1 per word. That could cut down the opinionated bloviating considerably.
