Actually, the first rule of gun safety is to always assume the weapon is loaded until checked. You'd never even be able to clean the weapon or look down the barrel if you always treated it as if it was loaded.

I despise this prosecutor as much as anyone, but the photo show that there is no magazine in the weapon. If the chamber was checked and then the weapon was pointed away from the jury for a demonstration, that's perfectly safe.

Why would anyone need to “look down the barrel from the muzzle? And why should the muzzle be pointed at anyone while cleaning?

I’ve handled thousands of firearms. And never once been tempted to look down the muzzle. But to each his own I guess.
