Why does he want to work for the bums after that? It's a safe bet that he doesn't care for any of those people at all.
I suspect that a lieutenant with 19 years on the job at the Norfolk PD has learned since his firing how hard it's going to be to replace the salary and pension that he had. (That's what he's fighting for.)
