The dirty little secret that has been erased from almost all the history books is that many of the tribes perfected the art of extended torture, and then partook in cannibalizing the victim, so they could absorb his strength. If you read some of the diaries written by colonists/Americans about their Indian captivity, it was brutal.
These Indians treated captives of other tribes much more horrid than anything the Europeans ever did to them.

True. I came upon some detailed research articles and book excerpts a professor ordered on interlibrary loan. Torture was common.

There was someone on FR years ago who told how his ancestors were taken as slaves by Indians from Deerfield, Massachusetts and forced to walk to Canada. Somehow I think they were able to get back.
