First of all Mullis was not a medical doctor, he was a molecular biochemist. 2nd, he did not invent the covid test, he created/discovered how PCR or polymerase chain reaction technique could be used to read or identify specific desired DNA sequences.
In the nearly 50 years since, PCR machines are damn near like Star Trek tricorders. So yes, there is a test for Covid DNA that can be done with PCR.
But no PCR test can tell you if the DNA is from an active infection or one you’ve recovered from. Symptoms are what tells you that you are sick, the test merely identifies the disease organism. There are PCR tests that can do an entire panel of over a dozen different respiratory diseases with a single sample swab for what are basically the same symptoms of fever, congestion and coughing.
