China calls on citizens to leave eastern Congo after attacks

China on Wednesday urged its citizens to leave three provinces in eastern Congo as violence intensifies in the mineral-rich region.

A posting from the Chinese Embassy in Kinshasa on the WeChat online messaging said a number of Chinese citizens had been attacked and kidnapped over the past month in the provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Ituri, where several anti-government rebel groups have a presence.

It said Chinese residing in the three provinces should provide their personal details by Dec. 10 and make plans to leave for safer parts of Congo. Those in the districts of Bunia, Djugu, Beni, Rutshuru, Fizi, Uvira and Mwenga should leave immediately, it said, adding that any who do not do so “will have to bear the consequences themselves.”

“We ask that all Chinese citizens and Chinese-invested businesses in Congo please pay close attention to local conditions, increase their safety awareness and emergency preparedness, and avoid unnecessary outside travel,” the embassy said.

No details of the incidents were given, although the embassy last month reported five Chinese citizens were abducted from a mining operation in South Kivu, which borders Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

IIRC, President Nixon predicted this. He talked about how one of the things he regretted most about his mishandling of Watergate and his resignation was that the plans he had to help Africa wouldn’t be followed up.

He suggested that China would step in instead. But that the African’s would rebel against the Chinese even more than they had the West.

*Chinese residing in the three provinces should make plans to leave for safer parts of Congo.*

Read between the lines. They don’t want them back home. How many of those Chicoms ‘volunteered’ to be assigned to that $hithole.

So much for Belt and Road.

China’s about to find out the hard way that just because you can buy them don’t mean they’ll STAY bought.

Re your post 7, where Nixon predicted that the Chinese would fill the vacuum in Africa left by Western decolonization:

Nixon was short-sighted in some areas (Watergate!), but far sighted strategically.

China could easily invade Congo and take over the country and its resources. Guess they don’t think it’s worth the effort.

China CANNOT easily invade the Congo. For that you need sealift logistics, an aircraft carrier, subs, and on the ground logistics, not to mention all the comms and elint support.

They have the bodies, but they are fodder, not trained amphibious expeditionary forces.

Before you say, “Yeah, but its the Congo,” remember that Yemen routed state of the art equipped Saudi forces without much trouble at all.

Yep. Noxious Nixon opened the door for China to become a world power, a door that Callous Traitor Clinton stepped through and sold them every military secret we had. Very “far sighted strategically”. Maybe Brandon can finish the job that Noxious Nixon and Callous Traitor Clinton began?

The problem was not arms or training, as most of the Saudi effort on the ground was spent building sex forts.

Nixon’s idea was to split China and Russia. Of course, no one had enough sense in government to monitor the ongoing results.

That opening seems to have taken a turn for the worse, I’ll agree. I wonder what would have happened if the US had tried to keep China isolated for the last 50 years. That would probably be just as bad.

Nixon didn’t make Clinton sell “dual use” guidance technology to China that advanced their offensive capabilities by (some say) 20 years. How could Nixon foresee a Clinton or an Obama or a Biden?

You that claimed Noxious Nixon was very far sighted strategically, so if that was true, then it was what it was.

Noxious Nixon opened the door, as I said - he knew full well that others would step through it ; that was the whole point of it in the first place. Splitting China and Russia was a fools errand, as they were already fighting along the Amur river boarder. He was well aware of the bad blood between the two.

The rest is “what if” speculation with no foundation.
