The gun could have a worn sear but that’s something easily checked. That he says he “sort of cocked” the gun makes me think he may have pulled the hammer back not far enough for the gun to be cocked but far enough fire the round when he released the hammer. Bad gun safety. His fault. Shouldn’t have been pointing it at someone whatever the case.

So Baldwin says that he didn’t pull the trigger but admits to pulling back and dropping the hammer on a single action revolver? He may not have “pulled the trigger”, but pulling back the hammer and allowing it to drop in that situation is effectively the same thing as pulling the trigger. Baldwin really is a moron. If his lawyers advised him to do this interview, then they should never work again.

And yet he has still not been arrested and charged.

Then he did NOT cock the gun. If he had pulled it all the way back and locked it, but he even admits he let it go after pulling it back.

I did this once with a 38 Special. I pulled the hammer back but didn’t lock it and let it go.

It went Bang!

Lucky for me the round only hit the grass in front of my feet.

Most actors probably don’t understand guns. That’s why production companies hire armorers. And have protocols to assure that live ammo isn’t on set.

That is not possible even with an old style Single Action Army UNLESS you are pulling back on the trigger and then ONLY if you bring the hammer to the full cock position. If you release the hammer before it reaches the full cock position, regardless of whether you are pulling back on the trigger or not, the hammer CANNOT fall back to the fully lowered position.

A couple of nights ago a FReeper linked to a site with instructions for checking the cocking mechanism on SAA revolvers. I got mine out, ran through the check a few times and found the above statements to be true.

How to Function Check A Single Action Army Revolver

In short, the only way a mechanically sound SAA revolver can discharge is if the hammer is pulled back to the full cock position and the trigger is pulled.

Thanks for that information. So it’s a dead (excuse the pun) certainty that Baldwin pulled the trigger.

...the only way a mechanically sound SAA revolver can discharge is if the hammer is pulled back to the full cock position and the trigger is pulled.

And unless someone has extrasensory perception, it's impossible to tell if the firearm in question is mechanically sound without examining it in person. Even then, they might miss something, if they're not an experienced gunsmith...

LOL Yes, almost a dead (pun intended) certainty.

You called the only other possibility. Mechanical failure from wear or breakage. Doesn’t seem very likely to me that a firearm provided by an armorer for a movie would be one that was used heavily enough to be that worn.

A firearms expert will be able to determine the condition of the gun with absolute certainty. I have no doubts that the Santa Fe authorities will have at least one, if not several, experts examine it. So will the legal teams of everyone filing law suits.

It’s going to get more scrutiny than Lee Harvey Oswald’s rifle. :)
