China is attempting to woo Equatorial Guinea into allowing them to build a military base off their coast, according to a report - a move which would give Beijing a foothold in the Atlantic, and deeply worry Washington....

...Were China to convert the Bata port into a military base, it would enable Beijing to repair and rearm their warships and other naval equipment in the same waters in which the US Eastern Seaboard sits.

....U.S. government lawyers accused the president's son - whose Instagram account shows him meeting world leaders such as the Pope and Israel's prime minister; playing polo, or posing on a private jet - of amassing a fortune of more than $300 million 'through corruption and money laundering'.

The money entered his accounts while earning less than $100,000 a year as minister of agriculture and forestry....

according to the bullet points of the article, China has already ingratiated themselves with a contract to 'train' Guinea's police force, while the US provides oil tech. So the corrupt leader and his son like to play both sides.

I wonder how competent their carrier pilots are. That’s the real acid test. Having a big toy is meaningless, unless you know how to play.

My initial thought as well.

This is no threat unless you just want it to be....

Conventionally speaking ..... yes.

I'm afraid the world's super powers are learning a lot of technology most of us are not aware of and I'm not convinced we HAVE an upper hand.

I want to think so, but .....

Link to Wikipedia article on Equatorial Guinea:

Brutal dictator (since 1979), corrupt officials, extreme wealth disparity despite oil resources, small population, capital is on island off of the coast. Perfect set-up for China.

War is logistics. A long supply line spells disaster.

WWII war in the Pacific shows what happens if you get too far from your supply base and the enemy has air superiority.

We should not accept China anywhere in North or South America but even if they did get a foothold it would only be an illusion of a threat if total war became a reality.

A few well placed yuan just might convince the leaders of one of the world's poorest, and most corrupt, nations to cooperate. I've said it before and I'll never stop saying it...the decision of the world's advanced nations (the US,Europe,Japan, etc) in the early 1980s to open their ports to Chinese made goods will eventually prove to be catastrophic for world civilization.

How about 20 years from now? How was China’s space program 20 years ago? Where is it now? The Chicoms are playing a long game. We should, too.

They’re going to build a base that is thousands of miles away from their country, with a supply line that runs through seas controlled by potential enemies like Australia, India, and Vietnam. In the event of war the base would be untenable and useless.
