WASHINGTON – US Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) voted on Wednesday to block another attempt to provide Israel with $1 billion to replenish its Iron Dome system, citing the need to find a financial source to the bill. The vote took place as Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) asked for unanimous consent for the Senate to proceed with the House version of the bill.
“The Senate must pass HR 5323 as quickly as possible,” said Blumenthal. “Iron Dome has widespread bipartisan support in Congress as well it should,” he said, noting that during Operation Guardian of the Walls in May, the system intercepted about 90% of the missiles targeting populated civilians in Israel.
Paul replied to Blumenthal, “I’ve consistently opposed spending outside of the budget unless it’s offset by spending cuts elsewhere. It’s not only an opinion that I hold. It’s actually the law. It’s called pay as you go. We passed the law many years ago to try to balance our books by having people come forward with things that sound good, want to spend it, but not offset it by spending cuts elsewhere.
“There’s no question that the US has been a very good ally of Israel over time,” Paul continued. “Probably, funds exceeding 80 to 100 billion have been expended to Israel over the last four decades. Just on missile defense, the United States has given Israel seven billion.
I’m not disputing whether or not the extra billion dollars would help them,” Paul added. “I’ll vote for the extra billion dollars. And that’s what I will propose today, but it should be offset with spending cuts elsewhere. There’s a $3 billion fund that is left over from money we were giving to the Afghan national government. There is no Afghan national government. The Taliban have taken over.”

More tornadoes?
Why does it need unanimous consent?
No time for a floor vote until Feb
I am with Rand Paul on this, let Israel pay for its own defense.
Well, Rand Paul is paying with the budget. I just think it is wrong and unnecessary to spend our tax money on Israeli defense when we can’t fund and defend our own border. Use this money to build the wall, deport illegals, and so forth.
Genesis 3 - And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
We just need to budget wisely in order to help with their defense. The money for Afghanistan seems like an obvious solution.
I have read that this was agreed as compensation for a ceasefire with Hamas. Once again, the US prevented Israel from finishing off Hamas. You can’t be surprised that Israel wanted something in return.
Trump wanted to split Israel up. Then the election was stolen from him. Rand wants Israel defenseless. Every time we don’t support Israel, something happens. Just like it says it would in the bible
Trump wanted to split Isreal up?
Really?
He moved the embassy to Jerusalem.
I've asked this question before. Never received an answer:
* Apartheid South Africa blessed Israel mightily. When the world refused to sell Israel any uranium, South Africa did, enabling Israel to build many nukes.
Why was Apartheid South Africa not blessed? Why did the white South Africans, who so mightily blessed Israel, lose their country? Why are they suffering today? Where are their blessings?
* The United States -- and Britain, and Canada -- have been blessing Israel for the past several generations. Yet see how far we've fallen since then. Even as we defend Israel, our borders are invaded, to the point that we've lost our democratic institutions, our sound economy, and soon our very nation.
Where are our blessings?
Interestingly, even as we blessed the Israel, we've been departing Christ.
So perhaps the source of blessings is not some particular ethnic group, but Christ, and only Christ.
No, Rand simply wants Israel to pick up a check.
Israel is a wealthy first world nation, with many billionaires. Israel can easily afford to pay for its own defense.
Conservatives, in theory, oppose welfare and socialism. They believe that people should pay their own way, especially those who can afford it. Why should Israel be the exception?
Unfortunately yes JK was working on a peace deal; one that will eventually lead to the Man of Lawlessness and the 7-year Tribulation.
Very few understand where this is going.
And they’ve pretty much been trying it since Jimmy. Jimmy, Bill, W, Soetoro.
With every report I see about Israel’s stupid COVID mandates, it’s obvious to me that it has become a Nazi country. Why should American taxpayers support a Nazi country?
Yeah, that is the FIRST TIME I ever heard of any such thing.
Ever.
I’m sure Israel could pay for its own defense.
20% are Muslim or anti-Israel. They live inside the borders of Israel.
The pro-Israel population is around 7.6 million. That is the population of Washington state.
Israel is not a wealthy first world country.
Israel GDP per capita - $40,000.
USA GDP per capita - $70,000.
The USA is 75% more productive than Israel.
Israel spends 5.6% of its GDP on defense.
The USA spends just 3.7% of GDP on defense.
Unlike the USA, Israel must spend another 3% of GDP to defend themselves from the thousands of terrorists who live inside Israel's borders.
Israel is the only reliable ally America has in northeast Africa and the Middle East.
Give them the money, Rand. Do not punish our friends because you dislike Jews and Zionists.
Actually, he just wants the spending to be offset by cuts elsewhere in the budget, which is actually the law.
Where is our Iron Dome? We’re being invaded from south of the border and fighting endless wars with endless amounts of the middle east flooding in.
Israel is an ally. This is why we send them a few billion yearly in military aid that must be spent with American defense contractors. Same as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc. get many more billions in defense dollars from us. Mostly in the form of us keeping the shipping lanes open for oil transport.
Without us spending these billions, the Iranian pests would be much more able to project power in this area and into the shipping lanes.
