In most states, you cannot put workers on unpaid leave to avoid paying unemployment.

Nice move, United. Send ‘em all home without pay. That’ll show those miscreants who’s the boss! *spit*

This is where the union members find out they've been fleeced for dues all these years. As a union, they need to
all go out on strike;
either all can work or none will work.
...because if they can force the Jim Jones Jab on union members as a condition of their employment, they can force ANYTHING.

So thankful I got out of that company years ago. Continental Airlines was great, but when United bought them it all went to hell. From Worst to First back to Worst.

United employees are not allowed to file for unemployment while on unpaid leave, as the company said that doing so would be considered a fraudulent claim, according to Walker.
That depends on the State, but for most, I'm pretty sure unpaid leave is a valid claim for eligibility. One of my old companies was cheap and started gyping people on hours when it got slow. So a bunch of us had to threaten to file partial unemployment to force them to give us the hairs we were supposed to get (40hr supposed to, and getting scheduled for 10 or 15).
