Oxford High School Shooter - Follow Up Article
Oxford Leader ^ | 01/12/2022 | Dean Vaglia

"The criminal cases against the student and parents for their alleged responsibility in the Nov. 30, 2021 Oxford High School shootings returned to court last Friday. "...Ethan Crumbley, 15, waived his right to a preliminary exam and his case moves to the Oakland County Circuit Court."

"Parents Jennifer and James Crumbley appeared before Judge Julie Nicholson..."

"James worked as a DoorDash delivery driver, while Jennifer’s employment was terminated."

“The only ties these two individuals have — other than their son who is awaiting trial — are out of state,” McDonald said. “Both defendants’ families live in Florida. James Crumbley’s other children, his parents [and] his siblings live in Florida. Jennifer Crumbley’s father, mother and brother live in Florida.”

Further down in the article:

"According to the prosecution, as far back as March 2021, the suspected shooter repeatedly texted his parents while alone about demons, ghosts or intruders in their house. In May 2021, Ethan filmed himself torturing and killing animals at the house and kept a decapitated bird’s head in his bedroom. He made Molotov cocktails and constantly searched the internet for firearms, school shooting information and Nazi propaganda, including buying and displaying Nazi memorabilia..." "Notebooks recovered from the home displayed drawings of Nazi imagery and firearms."

"Ethan obtained his parents’ firearms in August 2021, photographing himself holding James’ loaded handgun and sending the picture to a friend saying “It’s time to shoot up the school. Jk jk jk.” The suspect filmed a video at home describing plans to shoot up OHS."

"Social media posts by the suspect and his parents state the gun was a gift for Ethan. Footage from a shooting range shows him teaching his mother how to operate the firearm."

Nobody gets a manual on parenting, and hindsight is always 20/20. As difficult a subject as this is, I highly recommend looking through the entire article in case you ever have to intervene in a situation like this BEFORE innocent people get hurt.

For what it's worth, Oxford really has been a great example of dealing with the aftermath of something this tragic. Signs are everywhere with the phrase "Oxford Strong", with support evident throughout neighboring communities. There's a main entertainment complex carved from an old factory with restaurant, bowling alley, shops and even a indoor go-kart racing track near the High School. Signs on the doors into it read "No Media Allowed - Protect our kids". Chalk was put out along the hall walls for the students to write words of support to the families and each other - it's about 80 yards of healing to walk through.

For what it is worth, this a fairly one-sided view, by a politically minded prosecutor.

The parents have been locked up the whole time, with an impossible to reach $1,000,000 bond.

The parents were under death threats from the start. Selling possessions and accumulating cash were eminently prudent things to do.

Just because their son did things they did not know about does not make them negligent.

They may not have been great parents.

However, this prosecution smells very political.

The precedent intended to be set is to have all guns locked up and unloaded anytime there is a minor in the house.

In today's world, the idea they could get anywhere on a "run for it" is absurd. They were and are threats to no one.

I am not saying the parents could not have done better.

What I am saying is the standard the prosecution is setting for parental behaviour is extremely high.

From what the prosecutor is inferring, parents have to act like little tyrants and monitor every social media post, every notebook, every scribble.

I will need to see much more before I am convinced to the level of negligent manslaughter charge.

But abort/kill the twins inside you and you’re still a good person, both parents.

Kids have free will. Hypocrite parents don’t understand this much like the Pharisees.

In this day & age, I would highly recommend parents have a plan to monitor their kids’ social media accounts and browser history. However you work it out with your kid is up to you (”you can have a phone/computer, AS LONG AS I have access to look at what you’ve been up to whenever I believe it’s necessary”).

I’m sure saying this ruffles some feathers along the lines of “but we have to show we trust them”. You may be able to trust your kids, but you can’t trust all the people at the other end of that connection and what they might make them believe, nor should you. Until the child reaches the magic age of 18 or so, you can be held responsible for some of the kids’ less perfect actions.
