I have always loved these kinds of graphics:
The thing that I always found fascinating about Krakatoa was the famous lighthouse that was smashed in half by a 600 ton coral head that was picked up by the tsunami as it came ashore...and by looking at the remaining stump of the lighthouse, they could see how high in the wave that 600 ton rock was riding.

There is a very good special on youtube about Tambora.
The Brits really became the fathers of volcanology with that one.
