There's good reason why he had to add...

"I'm serious"....

Many on the left would love to get rid of Congress and the court system altogether and establish a dictator with absolute power.

I'm sure Colbert is not like that, but many on the left are.

I imagine Colbert knows nothing of the founders debates and discussions about why to have a Senate and how it should be structured.

The Dims are always talking about “democracy” while always denying why we have a republic, and why the Constitution limited and divided the powers of the Federal government.

He thought his support for his sister’s congressional election would push her to victory. She lost.
Got his popularity dumped on.
He whined and whined about it. Was a pleasure to watch.
He is the worst jerk of the late-night jerks.

“I have a much better idea... let’s get rid of Steve Colbert.”

Couldn’t agree more!

The left has been attacking federalism for decades. Changing the way senators are elected was part of that strategy. Now it wants to concentrate all power in Washington DC and make majority vote the gold standard in both houses, all while turning states into mere apparatchiks to implement federal dictates.

The states have been complicit in weakening themselves by pushing unpopular taxation power and responsibility to Washington because of sheer cowardice. Now governor’s scrap over federal funds bound by strings to Washington and beg their senators to keep the ruling party happy so the money will keep rolling.

I am not confident this can be reversed but we need to resist giving Washington and the parties much power over our lives.

All you need is 2/3 of the House, 2/3 of the (gulp!) Senate, and 3/4 of the states, and your wish is granted!

Nope. The Senate and the equal votes for each state (which is the big gripe of leftists) is the one part of the Constitution that cannot be amended. Want to get rid of the Senate, you have to get rid of the Constitution itself.

The masks are coming off of these Fascists.

“We are an anti-parliamentarian party that for good reasons rejects the Weimar constitution and its republican institutions. We oppose a fake democracy that treats the intelligent and the foolish, the industrious and the lazy, in the same way. We see in the present system of majorities and organized irresponsibility the main cause of our steadily increasing miseries.

So why do we want to be in the Reichstag?

We enter the Reichstag to arm ourselves with the weapons of democracy. If democracy is foolish enough to give us free railway passes and salaries, that is its problem. It does not concern us. Any way of bringing about the revolution is fine by us.

If we succeed in getting sixty or seventy of our party’s agitators and organizers elected to the various parliaments, the state itself will pay for our fighting organization. That is amusing and entertaining enough to be worth trying.

Will we be corrupted by joining parliament? Not likely. Do you think us such miserable revolutionaries that you fear that the thick red carpets and the well-upholstered sleeping halls will make us forget our historical mission?

Is our entry into the Reichstag the beginning of a compromise? Do you really think that we who have stood before you a hundred or a thousand times preaching faith in a new Germany, who have smilingly faced death dozens of times from the red mob, who have joined you in battling every form of resistance whether of official or nonofficial nature, who have bent before no command or terror, do you really think that we would lay down our weapons in exchange for a railroad pass?

If we only wanted to become representatives, we would not be National Socialists, but German National Party members or Social Democrats. We do not beg for votes. We demand conviction, devotion, passion! A vote is only a tool for us as well as for you. We will march into the marble halls of parliament, bringing with us the revolutionary will of the broad masses from which we came, called by fate and forming fate. We do not want to join this pile of manure. We are coming to shovel it out.

Do not believe that parliament is our goal. We have shown the enemy our nature from the podiums of our mass meetings and in the enormous demonstrations of our brown army. We will show it as well in the leaden atmosphere of parliament. We are coming neither as friends or neutrals. We come as enemies! As the wolf attacks the sheep, so come we. You are not among your friends any longer! You will not enjoy having us among you!”

-Josef Goebbels 1933

What I find interesting but not surprising when you think about it. The leftists who echo Colbert want us to be more like Europe have a European parliamentary system. However they haven't a clue how that actually works! The PM in those countries is NOT directly voted for by the populace. He's a MP only voted for directly by his particular parliamentary constituents. Is the “party leader” or one of them and is selected to be PM by a party conference. How democratic ?

Since the new deal, states have weakened themselves, on a bipartisan basis, under the inducement of getting “federal money”, as if the larger federal enterprise does not come at a cost to their own citizens, which it in fact does via federal taxation.

We need to launch a movement among GOP governed states to shrink the federal enterprise, and without federal taxation, leaving states more in charge and the citizens of the states benefiting from lower federal taxes.

Agree !

But its going to be a tough sell !

The present system is Santa Claus! Your selling “Dad took the cars keys away becuuase you were caught drinking and driving!”.

The hardest to sell that to will be women.

The idea of getting rid of the Senate has been floated for a couple of years now because it’s as “crazy” as the Electoral College is. Proponents want it to better represent the population of the US ... which would be what the House is for.

I don’t know if a proportional senate would have districts or just “at large” seats because no one thinks that far.

But considering all the responsibilities of the Senate in the Constitution, the document would need a hell of a rewrite rather than just an amendment. The amendment would be as long as the Constitution itself.

Traitors must swing.

They all will. Patience. Let them identify themselves as such first. No where to run! No where to hide. It will be glorious.

Moving the Window. Pushing what they really are after a little closer each iteration.

Direct Democracy is mob rule and a horrific idea. 50%+1 is a sure way to subjugate a population.

What do you expect from a brain-dead leftist born in DC?

The United STATES of America. Once you remove the interests of each STATE (i.e., NOT cities and urban crap hole cities and counties dominated by leftists) from the process of this government you have nothing but a small ‘d’ democracy - the kind like France in 1799.....

As I once read in a book by John Ball, “The First Team,” wherein a political leftist asked a detractor “what should I do, then?” The opponent said, “you should cut your throat.”
