The Omicron variant of coronavirus is "in retreat" and England is in the "next chapter" of its fight against the virus, the health secretary has said.
Speaking at a Downing Street news conference, Sajid Javid said the lifting of Plan B COVID-19 measures is a moment "we can all be proud of".
The work from home guidance has been rescinded with immediate effect, while COVID passes and mandatory mask-wearing in shops and on public transport will end next Thursday.
Face masks will also no longer be required in classrooms from Thursday and communal areas from 27 January.
Restrictions on visits to care homes will be eased further, with more details due to be set out in the coming days.
The health secretary added: "Instead we must learn to live with COVID in the same way we have to live with flu.
"And we will be setting out our long-term plan for living with COVID-19 this spring."

First BREXIT, no VAXIT! BOOM!
The war is over! And we lost!
Omicron never did much of anything a anyways for it to be “in retreat”.
It was a lot of noise over nothing.
Open your borders to the Unjabbed, now!
None of this scamdemic is real, none of what they're doing is needed, we are suffering for nothing.
“None of this scamdemic is real, none of what they’re doing is needed”
Fact check: TRUE!
More like Boris is in retreat.
The first sensible thing done in the western world (Sans Sweden).
Lets see how quickly no other country follows their leed.
Nice!
Thanks. Use at will. Print t shirts. LOL!
Sajid Javid
Not sure I’d want any “health sec” with a name like that.
Probably poisons the water.
The whole this is.
Hey Covid,
When you’ve lost the British...it’s ovah, baby.
Remember the swine flu in 2009? It was declared a global pandemic. We lived our lives normally without having non-stop propaganda about cases and deaths.
In the beginning I made a reference to it just being the flu.
Then as the figures were gamed, I and a lot of other people
accepted that this was something far beyond the flu.
I’m pretty much back to thinking this was pretty much just
another flu.
When you consider that only 25% of the deaths reported were
solely due to COVID-19, you gotta admit you’ve been taken
to the cleaners.
It was a 99.3% survivable disease, but when you count out the 4 most common comorbidities and those who died WITH the disease rather than OF the disease, it probably ends up a 99.95% survivable disease.
Omicron cases in the UK are down over half from their recent Peak. South Africa, a few weeks ahead of the UK, is seeing new cases down to a tenth of their peak.
The Omicron death rate in the UK barely registered any change from the omicron wave. There is just no rational argument to continue restrictions. It has clearly burnt down to the embers.
The USA just crested our Omicron wave on the 13th. We should also see new case numbers nosedive over the coming weeks. Some level of COVID of immunity (vaccination, infection or both) will (very likely already does) exist in well over 95% of the US population. This Omicron wave will be over in February. There just is very little room left for another variant to have a run, unless it can evade the prior immunity.
Governments all over the World are preparing to roll back their restrictions as COVID burns out, and travel restrictions are already loosened Globally.
That’s how you end the pandemic. Someone in charge says “the pandemic is over”. Poof, it’s gone.
