A former Vermont legislator and House majority leader has died with the help of a law he himself helped pass that allows the terminally ill to end their own lives, his wife said.

Willem Jewett died Jan. 12 at his home in Ripton at age 58, said his wife, Ellen McKay Jewett. He was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma over a year ago. In the days before his death, he supported changes to the 2013 law to make it easier for terminally ill people to navigate and get a prescription, VTDigger first reported.

“It is very Willem fashion to still be pushing for legislation that he believed in and using his ability to advocate for people,” his daughter Abigail Jewett said Wednesday.

And as he pushed that final button, he was heard to utter a blood-curdling scream which will be used by Hollywood for generations and will always be known as the Willem Scream.

So you can get a prescription for drugs to kill yourself, but not for Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine?

“So you can get a prescription for drugs to kill yourself, but not for Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine?”

Well, obviously, that’s because Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine are for more dangerous than a successful suicide.

If they had put their money where their mouth was, they would
have just exposed him to COVID-19.

That’s sure death according to them.

Horrible. When it is allowed, it will quickly be seen as a greedy and selfish not to. Heirs, medical people, etc will all subtlety pressure people by just letting them know they have options.
If you want to do it, do it on your own.

Problem is, for most suicides, someone has to come along and clean up the mess you left behind and some suicides are very messy. Often it is a loved one who finds you dead and he or she will carry that memory to the grave.

I can visualize a gallows kind of contraption that drops the person into a wood chipper that spews over the creek. ;-D

Did any of us actually read the whole story?

I'm in the Medical field...and totally get what he wanted.

He knew he was terminal...and choose how to die.

I've seen too many people...not understanding they ae going to die.

My Father a WWII decorated Marine...knew when he got the news..he was going to die. He died at my house.

Dyeing is after living.

How do you want to die?

I've seen too much...and could tell too many stories.........

“How do you want to die?”

Like my cousin. 51, went to bed, passed away, the covers weren’t even disturbed.

Natural causes

This sort of thing is why I am not a libertarian.

The idea that anyone should be able to do what they want to themselves is cultural suicide, in this literally so.

Unless that was a disposable wood chipper, some person is going to be needed to clean it out for future use.
Some of the dirtiest jobs still require human beings to do them, not those expensive robots quite yet.
Therein lies a new personal trauma in addition to the victims’.

My best friend died in bed, one week after getting his first SS check. He had purchased tickets for him and his lady round trip to Hawaii that same day. I had called his good friend in Alberqurqe the evening before we cleaned up our empties and went to bed. They had a great talk. He went to bed, and passed without a lick of thrashing. His gal pal was devastated, as he was just 65 for a few weeks, but like he always said, it is what it is. I always say, he had the best life and death.
