Weekly new jobless claims unexpectedly jumped last week by the most since October, with some renewed virus-related disruptions at least temporarily impeding the labor market's recovery.
The Labor Department released its latest weekly jobless claims report Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Here were the main metrics from the print, compared to consensus estimates compiled by Bloomberg:
Initial jobless claims, week ended Jan. 15: 286,000**** vs. 225,000 expected and a revised 231,000 during prior week
Continuing claims, week ended Jan. 8: 1.635 million vs. 1.563 million expected and a revised 1.551 million during prior week
Initial unemployment claims rose for a back-to-back week, coming in near the 300,000 level. This represented some backsliding from recent progress in the trajectory of jobless claims. Claims had reached a 52-year low of 188,000 in December, as many employers attempted to keep their existing workforces in the face of widespread labor shortages.

“Unexpectedly”
‘unexpectedly’
Right..
Some people don’t know nothin’
and some people are so dumb, they don’t SUSPECT nothin’!
Like Clockwork
Unexpectedly!
And Unexpectedly right after his press conference on a Wednesday evening!
Amazing!
You bunch of Bull Connors and Jefferson Davis’s need to hush!
Is this because some of the federal money has stopped, and people are reentering the workforce?
Drink!
(Dang it’a early...)
But wait, that can’t be. Joe just said the ue is at 3.9, the lowest it has ever been, and he has created 6 million new jobs in the last year, more than any president ever. Did he lie? /sarc
“Unexpectedly”
Drink!
Philosophical question: if things happen unexpectedly all of the time, when do they become expected?
I’m just here for the “unexpectedly”
It’s ugly out there right now, and Biden had the audacity to ask what President has done more than him in his first year.
- Inflation is soaring.
- The country is increasingly divided - to the level of group vs group hatred that probably hasn’t been this bad since the Civil War.
- Purchasing power is falling precipitously.
- Homelessness is making some areas of the country look like the third world. — Illegal immigration is uncontrolled, illegal immigrants are given licenses, and in places like NYC are being allowed to vote.
- We just added trillions to our national debt.
- The POTUS just said on national television that Russia might invade the Ukraine, but implied that it would be OK if it were just a ‘small incursion’.
- Justice has become a joke, and you can make millions insider trading or selling influence if you are a Democrat in office or the offspring of a Democrat in office - but you can get falsely accused, framed, and convicted if you are a target of the left.
- Our NIH funded research in China that almost certainly led to a pandemic, and we haven’t held them or China responsible. Instead, we are letting China’s efforts and ambition to dominate the world go unchecked.
There’s so much more, but suffice it to say that this is a very unsettling time in history.
Oops, time to cut interest rates.
........for years my favorite restaurant that I use frequently operated just fine. Yesterday, there was a sign on the door notifying faithful customers that they were cutting back operating hours and closing one whole day.
Reason: No help.
So, the TRUTH is that there are people that don’t need to work because the government sends them a check. The TRUE unemployment then is much less than what the government is reporting. “Lying” for marxists in the Whitehouse is a habit.
