'This award has changed but I love being a FEMALE artist!': Adele hits back at the woke BRITs as she beats Ed Sheeran to bag the inaugural genderless Artist Of The Year gong, before tearfully dedicating her third award to her son and ex-husband

Adele took home three awards at the BRITs at the O2 Arena on Tuesday, including the first ever genderless Artist Of The Year gong after the male and female categories were scrapped.

The Easy On Me singer, 33, who also won the award for Song Of The Year and the coveted Album Of The Year, hit back at the 'woke' ceremony as she insisted she 'loves being a female artist', after bosses bowed to calls to rid the awards of gendered categories.

Adele also tearfully dedicated her Album Of The Year award for '30' to her son Angelo, nine, and her ex Simon Konecki because the record is 'really about them', before crediting herself for 'putting out something so personal'.

Adele beat hotly tipped contender Ed Sheeran in the Artist Of The Year category - which now includes all artists regardless of gender - after they both released long-awaited albums around the same time last year.

During her acceptance speech, Adele told the audience: 'I understand this award has changed but I love being a female artist!', as she referenced the changes the awards board had made to the ceremony.

The BRIT Awards sparked controversy last year when they announced they would be ditching the traditional male and female categories and switching to gender-neutral gongs for the first time in its history, causing naysayers to brand the event 'woke'.

Organisers divided opinion and some were left outraged by the decision, which came after calls led by non-binary singer Sam Smith.

Such a shame Adele has to hold on to out-date ideas like male and female.

No more hateful, exclusionary gender awards. The world is now a better place.

(and to all the sarcasm-impaired, that was sarcasm. I can't believe I have to include this. These sarcasm disclaimers are as bad as genderless awards)

Not that he gives a woop, but I still don’t get Ed Sheerans popularity. Good for him. Every performer wants to be accepted, but to me he is duller than day old dishwater. Perhaps it is because Ed is one of the very few young men singing “Crooner” type songs and with acoustic strings. Maybe he’s a rare bird.

MTV did it first (as early as 2017): Curtain falling on gender specific acting awards

The Oscars are the main award to watch. When that goes genderless, all the others will follow.

Isn't it exclusionary to have a singer award? What about people who create noise in other ways? What about the screamers, the jackhammer operators, the fire alarm bell operators?

Shouldn't the Best Singer Award be scrapped in favor of a Best Noise Maker Award?

Frankly I don’t care for her singing ability because her personality and ego, not to mention all her drama and complaining, drag that ability down.

I’ve only watched her and heard her interviews a couple times....but not hard to see she’s another unstable celebrity.

“What about the screamers, the jackhammer operators, the fire alarm bell operators? “

Alas, their record sales have been poor.

I like his songs.

Of course, I still like Harry Connick, Jr.

Harry Connick is different; he has obvious talent at arrangement and big band direction.
I like hearing him do pieces such as “Moonlight Seranade” by Glenn Miller.
To my ear, it always seems that Ed Sheeran is straining to stay in tune or to sustain a whole note when he sings.
To each his own, though.

Think of them as different kinds of bread - white bread, whole wheat bread, honey week bread, etc.

Some like all kinds of bread, for different reasons.

I was most certainly NOT comparing the two. Ed’s got a mostly ‘poppy/hispter’ thing going on. HCJr is multi-talented, and I agree - the “crooner” type, and Glenn Miller is a good comparison.
