Long ago and far away in the 1960s when I was a 20-year-old graduate student, I joined the American Civil Liberties Union for all the right reasons. This was the age of the Warren court when individual rights were being extended to criminal defendants and many of traditionally liberal civil liberty protections were being enshrined into the Bill of Rights. I was for that, I still am.

Ronald Reagan famously said, "I did not leave the Democrat party, it left me." Well, I left the ACLU because it left me. Like so many other American institutions, the ACLU has been co-opted by extreme Marxists. In the 1960s the ACLU could march under the banner of a "liberal" philosophy in the true meaning of the word. It did not take long for the left by its actions to taint the word "liberal" so that the word had to be abandoned even by the likes of Hillary Clinton who claimed that she was a "progressive." There was a time before American Marxists tainted the word that liberal meant to be in favor of the Bill of Rights.

One can draw the analogy of the ACLU with the ADL if one likes.

“Long ago and far away in the 1960s when I was a 20-year-old graduate student…”

So, that really IS your picture. ;)

I appreciate your post, but I am not sure that it is not the nostalgic, American use of the word “Liberal” that is the transient usage. For longer than not, I think, the “Liberals” have felt that only they deserve freedom.

No single executive may embody the new ADL better than Hershenov who mentored Obama when he was just starting out and proudly worked for George Soros.

Greenblatt and his allies are remaking the ADL into just another of the interchangeable leftist groups looking for handouts from Soros, Omidyar, the Rockefellers, Buffets, Gates and others that have hijacked and are controlling American politics and society. Institutional capture is an ongoing process...

Mapping how and where Marxists are taking over is one of Daniel Greenfield' quests... We are blessed to have strong good people among us. Glad you identified the fall of the ACLU early too ...
