For those you so inclined, Minnesota's 1st CD stretches across the lower southern half of Minnesota from the Wisconsin border to the South Dakota border. It is a GOP leaning district that the GOP captured in 2016 - but it's not a slam dunk. Gov Tim Walz held this seat before being elected Governor in 2016.

Kidney cancer is one of the worst too, almost as bad as pancreatic cancer which is the GOAT of cancers.

I don’t think a Congressman can ever be appointed. Special election, maybe.

Re: "Pancreatic cancer, which is the GOAT of cancers."

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest one-year survival rate in men (23.7 per cent) and women (25.3 per cent) and for five-year survival in both men (6.4 per cent) and women (7.5 per cent).

https://minnesotareformer.com/2022/02/18/u-s-rep-jim-hagedorn-dies-after-two-year-battle-with-cancer/

… Minnesota statute indicates that if a vacancy occurs more than 22 weeks but fewer than 27 weeks before the state primary, the governor has three days to call for a special election to be held on the day of the primary election, with a special primary held 11 weeks prior.

The Minnesota primary election is scheduled for Aug. 9, 25 weeks from now…

Re: Give it a rest

Last month, Hagedorn — who was vaccinated — tested positive for Covid-19 and was experiencing mild symptoms, and was hospitalized as a precaution since he was being treating for kidney cancer at the time.

I have a friend who is battling kidney cancer. They removed the bad kidney a couple years ago and he’s been fighting it at home ever since. He had to retire early.

I worked with someone who developed medullary thyroid cancer. He succumbed to it, eventually. It had spread to his liver and other areas. Radiation and chemo just prolonged his suffering.

It is nasty stuff.

Representatives are never appointed by governors. Only senators are if they become unable to complete their term. Special elections are held to fill a rep's term.

It's cost versus benefit decision. I have to say that your friend made a good decision, because it was his decision to retire.... but just because you have Stage 4 Renal Cell carcinoma doesn't mean you HAVE to retire.

Some choose a different path.

Governors have only ever appointed senators, a Constitutional holdover from when senators represented state governments rather than the general population.

Over the last few years I've known at least 7 or 8 people with lymphoma - including my FIL, my USMC buddy and his wife, and my next door neighbor.
Their lives (and bank accounts) were devastated as they fought the disease ... and oh, how they suffered.
They all eventually succumbed.
