Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a "military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region
He urges Ukrainian soldiers in eastern Ukraine to lay down weapons and return to their homes
Putin warns that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia
Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

Well said. Also, (speaking of Ukraine here), as with most civil wars, there’s nobody to like among the biggest fools, grifters and all-around bad guys on both sides, but sadly, again as in most civil wars, they punch far above their weight.
I’m just jumping around as many VK.com sites for Russian cities as I can to just quickly get a sense of comments for posts about the war
“They don’t invade Taiwan. They surround it (embargo) until it begs for mercy. Taiwan is on empty within a week.”
I remember a news article stating China ask Russia not to invade until after the Olympics. China will move on Taiwan in the next 7 days. China will first watch how the US and Europe responds to Russia.
Australia needs to start preparing their forces now for a fight.
South Korea also needs to ready their forces, North Korea might decide to go South after China takes Taiwan.
The ball is rolling down hill and it is fast. Unfortunately, we do not have a real President to lead this country.
Biden and his Neocons handlers were stupid. By pushing for Ukraine to join NATO, they provoked Russia. And they did so without having the means, or the intent, to back up their policy.
Had Biden said early on, we will not welcome Ukraine into NATO, this crisis would nave been nipped in the bud. Russia would not have invaded.
[Oh please, Russia doesn’t give a crap about Poland]
And all of Free Republics pro Putin/Xi/Khamenei allied Kremlin mouthpiece’s can finally celebrate!
I don't think Ukrainian voters will be feeling "pro-Russia" anytime soon.
Have they launched hypersonic missiles yet?
They are not friends. But allies needn't be friends. They need only have common interests.
Russia didn’t target any civilian areas
I’ll enjoy those delicious globalist/neocon tears
[Oh please, Russia doesn’t give a crap about Poland]
Nice zero proof you got there for your argument
Yah, how dare Ukraine defend itself...
Not sure who is included in this “genocide” that Putin talks about, the only death I’ve read about attributed to the Ukraine government is that of some leader in the Donetsk republic back around 2018 (bomb in a coffee shop) and he was replaced by another clone with no actual result.
This sounds a bit like Gog and Magog to me, as in the kings of the north and south sit at a table, tell each other lies, then the king of the north sweeps in and the time of the end follows.
The imagery there, implausible as it seems from current logistics, sounds like an eventual crushing military defeat for the king of the north.
That could only happen if full NATO power is unleashed on Russia. If so, we would definitely be into world war three and a very real chance of a nuclear exchange, at least on military targets. Putin must know that if he fires one nuke at any NATO target, Russia will be obliterated. We may not do a whole lot better, first place in a nuclear war is not really where you want to be.
I have not read one comment here (yet) about the Baltic states which are another irritant to Moscow with more Russian citizens than Ukraine has, but NATO membership and some NATO forces (including the widely feared Canadians) in those countries already (ours being in Latvia).
Then you should keep in mind there is the Kaliningrad enclave which is territory of Russia wedged between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic. That must be bristling with military forces and the Baltic naval fleet. A very tempting target for NATO, I would think, if it comes to that.
As for Trump thinking this to be a good idea, I suppose he might know things we don’t know, but also, he probably has a strong feeling that Bidens are up to their necks in some sort of nasty business in Kiev and that might be why. I don’t think I want to live in a post-nuclear world just to see Hunter Biden’s wrongdoing made public, I would insist on including at least all other Democrats.
Canada’s finance minister and deputy PM Chrystia Freeland is worth studying too. She has a background of some sort with parents or grandparents who were Nazi collaborators in Ukraine (or so we are led to believe) and that may shed some light on some part of this developing crisis.
Hey, make no assumptions here, this could be pretty much the end of the world order as many have said it would be, whether that’s all bad or not remains to be seen, there are things about the world order that sucked in rather large and unpleasant ways, but trading it for a post-nuclear wilderness of every survivor for himself is a dubious proposition.
At least I assume I am talking to the three hundred people most likely to survive the longest, save me some spam (or freeze dried spaghetti), my supply could run out within five years.
That’s not going to be good for you, a Chinese citizen!
The Dnieper is the local equivalent of the Mississippi. Controlling it would enable Putin to have a clear shipping route for raw materials to the Black Sea.
Yes, the Russians do think that their fellow Slavs do love and admire the Russians as being the leaders of the Slavic people.
Now about the Truth - the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Lithuanians, and many other Slavic people hate/despise them greatly.
I think you can add many Ukrainians (like the loved ones of the ones murdered today) among the Slavs who hate the Russians.
I would welcome a nuclear war. What an exciting end to an action-filled life!
No better time then When we got a puppet on a throne of lies.
