Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a "military operation" in Ukraine's Donbas region
He urges Ukrainian soldiers in eastern Ukraine to lay down weapons and return to their homes
Putin warns that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia
Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
BBC Kyiv correspondent James Waterhouse says a Ukrainian government official has given an indication of the breadth of the Russian military action so far.
The official says there have been cruise missile strikes launched this morning on Kyiv, as well as troop movements in Odessa to the south of the country.
Troops have also been crossing the border in Kharkiv, about 25 miles from the Russian border, the official says.
Early signs according to witnesses and government officials are that this is something quite large-scale, Waterhouse says.
There are also multiple reports from local media citing Ukraine's Interior Ministry which says some of the missile strikes have attacked Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv.
Russia's defence ministry has denied attacking Ukrainian cities - saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defence and air forces with "high-precision weapons".

China has a lot of people.
Russia has a lot of land.
China views Russian land as a future part of China to be lived on by China’s people.
No problem. Brandy’s Company has already enacted oil sanctions against our own people.
There are things much worse than dying bravely in battle for your country.
You seem to want a situation in which the United States military directly engages the Russian military.
Reports of massive traffic jams to leave the city — officials advising to use trains instead. Incredibly, some people still walking around in city centers like nothing is wrong. Police cars driving around using loudspeakers to tell people to get off the sidewalks and into shelter.
Eh, not challenging that, just wondering how to get the desired meaning without opening up other loopholes.
Granted I’ve been up all night watching this horror unfold.
Maybe Clinton bamboozled ‘em with his used car salesman personality.
Also gotta remember that at that time relations between Ukraine and Russia were good, and Russia didn’t really look like much of a threat to anybody.
Let’s trade them for all the Afghan refugees Biden recently brought here. Guess we’d have to find them first since so many are already missing.
I am not so sure of that, but I don’t want to get into a huge side discussion. Too sleepy, anyway. Will just agree to disagree amicably. :-)

I think some people here are pretty ignorant about Russia. Not the vulnerable, scared Russia on the brink of invasion by a powerful and aggressive NATO its propaganda services dish out, but the real Russia. It’s been an all-conquering empire for almost 600 years. It is the size of the next 2 largest countries on Earth combined. It has twice the fighter aircraft of the European NATO countries *combined*. It is a serious threat to Europe. Whereas the principal threat NATO poses to Russia is of soiling Russian boots with NATO blood on NATO territory.
They can't. The UN troops are busy in Canada cracking down on peaceful protesters.
It wasn’t sarcasm. He is calling putin a genius and it’s not sarcasm. In his need to mock and belittle Biden he is praising Putin
It’s the wrong tactic. I don’t like it. And it is going to hurt him if he keeps doing it.
“Perhaps it’s beginning to dawn on us that Putin is acting crazy at this point, and he’s threatening military action against us.”
I humbly disagree. Putin saw an opportunity due to Biden’s weakness which will greatly enhance their global influence on the world stage. The UN will do nothing, NATO will do nothing, sanctions will do nothing. And mark my words, Nord2 has just become a negotiating point, favorable to Putin.
Everything Trump accomplished over the last four years, was canceled with one stroke of Biden’s pen. And this is the result.
One thing Zelensky can say, and it is a bluff, that not all of the nukes in Ukraine were accounted for back in 92. One might just happen to be in Moscow.
““Russian nukes fall on large cities and military targets””
What if some of those nukes removed by Ukraine in 92 were never accounted for? One in a Moscow subway could end this all pretty quickly.
Empires that "hold the world together" inevitable pay dearly. They expend blood and treasure abroad. They crush the liberties of their own citizens at home. And they become flooded with "conquered" foreigners and refugees.
It happened to the Roman Republic. It happened to Great Britain. It will happen to us.
I know a guy around here that was hurting to get me to go with azov and he’d post videos etc. I dealt with him in an unruly fashion. He almost sucked a buddy in.
I agree with Bismark. "Russia is never as strong, or as weak, at it appears."
