I’m at a loss here. I’m fine with either, just stop the switching with the understanding that at some point of the year, it’s either going to be darker than we desire earlier or lighter than we desire later. That’s how seasons work. Adjusting clocks doesn’t make the season not happen.

They can change the orbit of the earth to fix that problem.

I'm convinced that DST only existed in the first place because there was a time when most of the major U.S. cities were in the easternmost edges of their respective time zones and therefore had to contend with earlier sunrises and earlier sunsets than the regions further to the west. Just look at a map and see where all the major population centers in the 1940s were situated: New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, etc. Detroit was the only exception to this.

Boston is in the same time zone right now as Fort Wayne, Indiana. Today, the sun will set 57 minutes earlier in Boston than in Fort Wayne. It doesn't matter whether or not we use DST; I'd make the case that these two places probably shouldn't be operating on the same clock.
