Ohio Republicans discussing impeachment of Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor after map ruling
Columbus Dispatch ^ | 3/18/2022 | Haley BeMiller Jessie Balmert Laura A. Bischoff

House Republicans are discussing whether to impeach Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor after the Ohio Supreme Court rejected a third set of legislative maps and effectively ended all hope of a full May 3rd primary.

The court struck down the maps on Wednesday with O'Connor as the deciding vote, sending the Ohio Redistricting Commission back to the drawing board for the fourth time. A ruling on the latest congressional maps is expected any day.

O'Connor, a Republican, is seen as an independent voice on the court and sided with Democratic justices to throw out multiple sets of maps, arguing they did not comply with constitutional rules for redistricting. That's increasingly made her a target of fellow party members who contend she's shirking her responsibilities.

"It's time to impeach Maureen O'Connor now," Rep. Scott Wiggam, R-Wayne County, tweeted Thursday.

An email from a Republican state central committee member, obtained by USA TODAY Network Ohio, said an unnamed lawmaker disclosed that they would be filing an impeachment charge against O'Connor. Multiple House Republicans said there have been discussions about the matter, but it's unclear if any decisions have been made.

"I don’t understand what the woman wants," said state Rep. Sara Carruthers, R-Hamilton.

A statehouse insider, who requested anonymity to discuss the situation candidly, also confirmed Republican lawmakers are mulling impeachment and may move forward in the coming days.

"I don't know if it moves or not," the source said. "Judging by conversations I'm aware of, there is growing support for this move. I don't know if there's enough."

“I don’t understand what the woman wants,”

~~~
It’s obvious what she wants. I don’t know why there is an R by her name, but she clearly wants the maps gerrymandered for democrats.
I saw the second proposal. There was no gerrymandering. The areas were strongly contiguous. I didn’t see stretched shapes and lean shapes, let alone the winding and snaking you would see in extreme cases.
the courts are simply substituting their own judgment for those of the elected legislature. This is wrong.
Dumblecrats get what they want,,,pubbies don’t.
And then they whine about it. Happened here in NC. An outside commission made our maps...took the job FROM the Republican legislature and they claimed there was nothing they could do because courts and all.
I asked my Rep what the point of electing a Republican majority was if all they were going to do is knuckle under to the dumblecrats.
What’s really frustrating is those tiny blue areas rule the state.
Ohio Republicans need to wrap up the discussion and actually impeach the corrupt Ohio Chief Justice.
Impeach???
All talk, no action.
Threats of impeachment don't scare democrats, nor RINOs.
If there are grounds to impeach the Rino then the same grounds apply to the rats. The rats have changed the rules to remove all the unspoken checks and traditions. Pubbies use your political power to destroy these obamaholes.
Why don’t they just Legislate Away their Authority to interfere with the Legislature
O’Conner appears to be a successful democrat mole on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Why not impeach the Democrat justices too while you are at it?
Democrats should not ever get a pass for bad behavior. All should be held to the same standards of decency.
Exactly. Where in the constitution does it say state judges have the final say on it?
This is just another way to destroy republicans/conservatives!!
It has happened now in Pennsylvania for a second time, and NO responsible party has any fight left to counter the decision by and overreaching state Supreme Court that’s stuffed full of liberals
If anyone files a complaint, it has to go to the court.
That is the issue here, every map has had a complaint filed. Which, I can partly understand as there are only very small areas the democrats actually control. Like many other states the cities are democrat controlled.
Ohio by and large is a red state. The proposed map takes even more away from the democrats as dictated by the voters. The democrat party is having a temper tantrum about their loss and abusing the court by filing complaints up until it is too late to change the map for the May primary.
Like the article states, they are considering impeaching the judge from our party. The reality is the entire court is partisan and all need to be challenged on their bias.
What is at stake for democrats here is community issues. Their communities are being replaced with republican leaning representation on the maps. Which is legitimate. In other words they are losing Ohio to the opposition party.
A few judicial impeachment scalps every year would do wonders.
