Brooks: We Need to Pay for Increased COVID Spending, Deficits Fuel Inflation
Breitbart ^ | 03/19/2022 | Ian hatchett

On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks said that while he thinks increased coronavirus funding is needed, “the Republicans are right to make that point that we need to pay for this money.” Because deficit spending fuels inflation.

Brooks stated, “The Democrats are right. We need the money. We need to spend the money on the medicines, on the coverage, all the stuff that is in there. But I think we need to get back to a normal situation, where we pay for what we spend. If we just spend money without raising taxes, A. We fuel inflation, not a big — in this case, because it’s not a big bill. But we fuel inflation. And, B. We run up our debt at a time when interest rates are rising. So, we need to get back to normal life, where, if we’re going to spend money, we’re going to pay for the spending. And it should not be hard to raise $22 billion in taxes. … And so, I think the Republicans are right to make that point that we need to pay for this money. But the Democrats are right that we need the money.”

When all you have is a hammer (spending money like it’s water), everything looks like a nail.

American slaves are forced to fund the lie that enslaves them.

The US Government wastes too much money already. More taxes are the solution. Cut spending. It is easy to do. Every business does it regularly to keep costs under control. Start with a 10% cut across every program including defense, but exclude SS/Medicare. Then, next year repeat. Repeat annually until it is in in surplus and begin shrinking the debt until the debt is back to an appropriate level. No base line budgeting. No inflation adjustments. If Congress doesn’t like across the board cuts, then negotiate swaps, but keep the total cut the same.

And, absolutely no need programs or spending. Do it now, or, wait until we are not the reserve currency and the pain will be 100x.

Folks refer to the culprits in DC as "spendaholics" - funny thing is, that may literally be true. I know folks who cannot be happy, unless they're spending money. Because most people are not independently wealthy, I think a lot of people like that gravitate towards government, where they get to feel good spending other people's money! And when the actual tax income gets used up, these "spendaholics" just keep spending, running up the deficit and debt, because they do not want to stop - no matter how much damage it does to everyone around them.

Way too many American politicians are exactly like alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers, sex addicts, etc., etc...

That is an excellent theory. When you get right down to it, just about the ONLY thing people in Congress can do is spend OPM. They can pass laws to make our lives miserable, but they can do that very well spending our money and creating inflation (which is making all of us miserable).

In my entire lifetime, I’d be I count less than 20 useful, excellent and selfless Congressmen.

IIRC, the Republicans' "Contract With America" back in the 1990's included a voluntary (non-binding) term limits pledge, which I think a lot of voters appreciated. For a few years, it had a positive effect, by sending non-career politicians to DC. But (unfortunately) in the long term, it had a negative effect: the honorable civil servants followed through on the pledge, and declined to run for reelection. The riffraff conveniently forgot their pledges and stayed in DC...

But I think we need to get back to a normal situation, where we pay for what we spend.

When was that?
