they all wore inflateable life vests but most likely not cold weather flight suits. If they found them, they got out of the bird, but most likely froze before getting in a raft if one was deployed after the crash

Yes you are, this exercise is an annual event and training accidents are a fact of military life.
I was at Hill AFB, circa 1980 or 81 when a T-38 with the Thunderbirds crashed during a performance at an open house for the base. My brother broke his arm during basic training. I’m sure my brother, nephews, or cousins who served were involved in and/or knew of multiple accidents during their careers.
When I was stationed in Germany, an M1A1 Abrams had engine failure on a tank trail in the Grafenwoehr training area. A crew member of the M88 recovery vehicle sent to drag the Abrams back to the motor pool was killed when the brakes failed on the 88 and crushed him between the two vehicles.
Also had a local national pancake his BMW 7 Series at high speed into the back of another M88.
