If Russia manages to conquer Ukraine, it will be a shell of itself. All the civilians will have fled the country. So Russia will benefit from the land, the natural resources and the Black Sea access. But Russia will become a pariah nation, a supersized version of North Korea. I think Putin will take what he can get. Then settle for a cease fire. Call it a victory and go home.

Without even going into the moral issues of a country forcibly taking over another country against their will, and doing so by blatant destruction of civilians and their cities, and the special historical relationship between us and Europe, I'll mention one specific (self-serving) interest the US has in this matter.

The US has a HUGE national interest in keeping Russia from reconstituting the Soviet Union, which Putin has specifically expressed his intentions of doing in several recent speeches, and demonstrated in this and other recent actions in the region. China is a big enough threat as it is.

“I don’t know if Trump would do it but threatening to pull the U.S. out of NATO might sober up the Euro members of that swamp.”

Trump wanted out of NATO in his first term.(He’ll get a 2nd the way things are going)

However, Pompeo & Bolton talked him out of pressing the matter.

Trump also wanted a better relationship with Russia, not an alliance with Russia because that will never happen.(Neither country has enough in common geographically, historically, or in government formation to warrant a tight relationship)

The US establishment torpedoed any overtures with Russia by creating the “Mueller Russia Russia Canard.”(With the help of our little Limey buddies in the UK)

The Russia Ukraine War was preventable but three “leaders” and three dates made it a fait accompli.

The leaders are Mr Putin, Mr Biden, & Mr Zelensky.

The key dates are:

1) September 1,2021 when Biden & Zelensky came to a verbal agreement on “something” in Washington DC.

2) November 10, 2021 Blinken & his Ukrainian counterpart update a 2008 US Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership. The new charter gives an unclear path to NATO membership & says DC will NEVER recognize a Russian Crimea.(War drums start beating from Putin & the Russian establishment)

3) February 24, 2022 Mad Vlad goes off the “deep end” & the Russian military invades Ukraine on its special military operation.

Trump would never have let Pompeo sign the November 10th document that Blinken signed.
Sell stuff to Ukraine absolutely, make Ukraine an ally......No way in hell.

“Ukraine gives Russia Black Sea access for the Russian navy, which threatens the US fleet.”

Russia has Black Sea access without Crimea. Additionally, the US cannot even put a Surface Action Group in the Black Sea by treaty.

“Ukraine is the road into Poland, which is a straight plain into Germany.”

They’re big kids and able to defend themselves.

“Vital fuel pipelines run through Ukraine, which will show Russia to further control Europe.”

None of that fuel goes to the US. Much of it stops in Ukraine.

“Ukraine is a world breadbasket giving Russia control over Vital food resources.”

Russia is the world’s #1 wheat exporter. US #2. Ukraine #5.

“Ukraine is the 2nd largest European country, giving Russia manpower, resources and strategic position.”

Maybe. But what does that have to do with the US?

“Russia is already threatening Poland and demanding we withdraw from half of NATO. This isn’t going to stop at Ukraine”

That’s a European problem. The US should shed NATO and the risk it presents to US security.

“Russia will move tactical nukes into Ukraine”

Russia can already hit every corner of the globe with nukes. Quickly.

“Russian victory will lead to further aggression not only by Russia but by China.”

An assertion not in evidence.

“Russia is bringing Middle Eastern fighters to kill Europeans, not a good development.”

That’s emotion, not national interest.

“Putin plans to reconstitute a Russian empire which includes many of our allies.”

I believe Putin is seeking to reconstitute the Russian empire, but I’m not convinced we have any real allies in Europe.

“There is a Russian Chinese military alliance aimed at us.”

The US has considerable essential interests in Asia and China would do well to steer clear of that. Russia has negligible military presence in Asia and would be very unlikely to assist China in a confrontation there.

I responded to you detailed list. I expect the same courtesy.

More likely the old Russian Empire. But assume he wants to bring back the USSR...how does that affect real US interests?

It doesn’t change the nuke threat. Or the military threat to us at all.

>> And yet we have many here at FR siding with Putin, or at least saying that "both sides are wrong" and "this is not our fight." They argue that since Biden "and the Globalists" are against the Russians, then we shouldn't be. They are idiots and are pathetic. <<

Going by their own warped "logic", Trump is now "siding with George Soros" and "wants to get us into World War III because he puts Ukraine First over America first"

You claim you will never “waver” in your support of Trump and here he is diametrically opposed to your view.

Putin is another version of Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin.

Wake up.

I thought you were an America First kind of guy? What in Ukraine is in our national interest?

The China/Russia alliance the US is trying to put a wedge between just is not going to happen...... And now Saudi is seeing that the geopolitical shift is moving toward that alliance they’re looking to sell oil there and across EruoAsia . INdia most recently.

Biden is majorly blowing it for the USA.

Oil is still a fungible commodity, for the most part. Who the Saudis sell it to (unless this was a situation like Japan B4 Pearl Harbor, where we desired to and had the means to choke an enemy’s oil imports) is relatively unimportant. What IS important is whether or not the Saudis crank up output, and even that assumes we will not.

That very last is unfortunately true at the moment, and then we have, even worse, the Iranian nuclear “deal”. So, although I get there by a slightly different route, I DO agree with you on this: “Biden is majorly blowing it for the USA.” :-(

President Trump was never seriously considering pulling the US out of NATO unless the other members failed to meet their NATO obligations. (Specifically the 2% of GDP toward defense.)

I don’t know if President Trump ever said this, but, IMO, if a country would not even meet that minimum, how reliable would they be when it came to one for all, all for one, should an attack on another NATO country occur?

You can count me as one who has serious doubts that they would stand up when the time came.
