DETROIT (AP) — For years, Laela Bullock moved to her own rhythm when it came to schoolwork. The switch to remote learning, if anything, brought a welcome break from fights in the hallways of the 15-year-old’s Detroit school, but her grades still lagged.
Things started turning around with one-on-one tutoring this year — paid for with $1.3 billion the Detroit Public Schools Community District is receiving in federal COVID-19 relief aid.
At last, Laela is reading above her grade level, and on track to graduate on time, said her mother, Alicia Bullock.
“I’m so proud,” Bullock said.
The Detroit school system is putting much of its relief money toward tutoring, after-school programs and other efforts to shore up student achievement. District leaders hope the money will not only help students catch up on what they missed during the coronavirus pandemic, but also fix some of what has been broken for decades.
“This is the first time ... I actually feel we have equitable funding,” Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said in an interview. “Unfortunately, it had to come during a pandemic.”

Put a devoted father in the home and skip the Fed pork.
Very woke Detroit schools will never “catch up” no matter how much borrowed federal money they spend.
Sure, the answer is more money, the answer is always more money. It’s for the children!
I don’t think there is enough money to give Detroit to fix their schools as long as the current crop of leftists running things, (including the teacher’s union), stays in place.
Uninterested parent(s) are also a big part of the problem that money won’t fix.
“$1.3 billion the Detroit Public Schools Community District is receiving in federal COVID-19 relief aid.“
1.3 B! That plus their massively subsidized operating budget. Gee, l wonder how much aid rural and suburban school systems received
If they want better schools, they should just go full School Choice.
If they just want more money to spread amongst themselves, they should keep doing what they’re doing.
Cincinnati just hired Detroit’s Assistant Superintendent to be their new CPS Superintendent.
It was reported that Detroit Public Schools spends close to $30,000 per year per student. That is more than the most expensive private school in Cincinnati.
Detroit’s test scores and graduation rates are roughly the same as Baltimore’s. Among the lowest in the country.
BINGO!
(the root cause of all this problem...never mentioned in the MSM) Big success for Lyndon Johnson...the War on Poverty destroyed the black family structure.
“welcome break from fights in the hallways”
That is because of racial equity being enforced
Move a million Ukrainian refugees there. Plenty of fixers. Turn the state red.
First order of business will to undoubtedly build a lavish administration building somewhere w/ construction bids going to nephews/brothers of administrators.
That is not happening.
And the mandatory "pay to play" bucks up front.
I agree, Joe.
Back in the late 60s I knew a woman who had taught in the Detroit public schools. She said she spent most of the class time just trying to get the kids in their seats, much less teach them anything.
My wife taught one year in a public high school (Jacksonville, FL) and swore she would dig ditches before she ever did that again. There were knife fights in the girls' restroom.
Well, eventually if enough people leave, Detroit will get to a 1-to-1 teacher to student ratio.
MORE MONEY!!!!!
That fixes everything.
Maybe they can buy her parents to do what parents are supposed to do.
$30 grand per student? That is disgusting. Sickening. Obscene.
