Mum on Ukraine’s Security Wish List, Putin Instead Sends a Warlord to Mariupol

ATHENS — The considerable fanfare surrounding a fresh round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine at Istanbul yesterday risks fizzling fast — and if you are among the thousands still trapped in the besieged Ukrainian city (at least for the moment) of Mariupol, it probably already has.

That is because the real power broker in this mess, Vladimir Putin, has shot down an incipient humanitarian aid mission to the city that forces under his command have largely destroyed.

The idea for said mission started with a Greek proposal, to which France glommed on and Turkey too, but Mr. Putin reportedly told President Macron in another of their lengthy phone chats that Ukrainian forces still fighting in Mariupol would have to surrender before humanitarian aid can be dispatched, the Greek daily Kathimerini reported this morning.

Ukrainian fighters laying down their arms is little more than a pipe dream for Mr. Putin, who for his part appears to be throwing more mettle into the fight he started, its provenance be damned.

Russian state media reported that a Chechen warlord accused of multiple human rights abuses, Ramzan Kadyrov, has traveled to Mariupol to continue the Kremlin’s brutal onslaught of the strategic port city. According to the Times of London, the 45-year-old Mr. Kadyrov is notorious for torturing his critics in the tightly controlled Muslim republic he rules in the south of Russia.

Mr. Kadyrov has been one of Mr. Putin’s principal cheerleaders for the war in Ukraine, the paper reports, has mocked Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has taunted Elon Musk on Twitter, and has a penchant for wearing pricey Prada boots. If some of that has a surreal ring to it, the hard facts are that thousands of civilians have likely been killed in Mariupol since bombing began four weeks ago,

Putin has started deporting Ukrainians to Russia from Mariupol. This is why Ukrainians there are fighting to the death. The political Azov monicker at this point looks like something infiltrated by Putin just as Nazis had support of Stalin, because it is a pointless political monicker given the fighting is about avoiding the Putin ethnic cleansing aka remigration he was accusing others of perpetrating.

LOL. Mariupol is a captive city, a home of Donbas uprising in 2014. Nobody is fighting to the death except the remnants of Nazi Azov regiment. They used to hold the population hostages, shooting everyone trying to live. Now most of the Azov are dead and people are free to live, most are coming to Russia after the treatment their government subjected them to.

Wow, no mention of the cluster bomb that the UA used to slice and dice people in downtown Mariupol.

And every internet search blames Russia.Talk about a psy-op and complicit media. I don’t think there is any hope for people to break free from the propaganda being shoveled.

Oh go **** yourself you stooge.

I could have a small shred of respect for you of you joined the Russian army and volunteered to go fight “Ukrainian Nazis”. But you’re a coward who hides behind a keyboard.

Another nekulturny Russian savage, that’s you.

It’s pretty clear that the land corridor from Donbas to Crimea is what Russia really wants. The Kiev assault is all about keeping Ukrainian forces pinned in the north while the Russians complete the reduction of Mariupol, and consolidate and fortify their gains in the south.

Same old story here: Russian banditry. They don’t care Mariupol is destroyed because they just want to steal the land and gas beneath it.

Godwin's Law still applies. Every time I hear someone invoke the word "nazi", I know I'm being played by a propagandist.

Just hinting that MANPADs are more effective against airliners than against military aircraft.

People need to be reminded of the non-binding 1994 Budapest Memorandum, where Russia, America, and the U.K. pledged not to use military force against Ukraine in exchange for it renouncing the nuclear weapons it had obtained from the collapsing Soviet Union.

Russia violated the memorandum by invading Ukraine several times starting in 2014, and other guarantor countries failed to protect Ukraine.

Kyiv’s dispatched to Istanbul, David Arakhamia said that under the guarantees proposed by Ukraine on March 29, guarantor countries must consult each other within three days after the beginning of military aggression or hybrid war. How Putin will respond to all this, if it responds at all, is anybody’s guess.

The big sticking point is Ukraine wants security guarantees that are stronger than NATO’s Article 5, which commits each member state to consider an armed attack against one member state to be an armed attack against them all. Ukraine insist that this should be an agreement on security guarantees signed and ratified by parliaments to avoid repeating the mistake of the Budapest Memorandum, which was practically useless.

Are you suggesting that you’ll use a missile against a civilian airline here in the US?

Please, don’t be coy. Come out and say it, if you have any balls.

No, Azov is political, they do not fight to the death. The ones really fighting to the death are Ukrainians who know they are being deported to Russian misery and will not get the kind of life that the EU infrastructure investment have benefited in places like Estonia.

Azov is political KGB influence operation, a distractor from the reality on the ground.
