There’s ample room for a compromise settlement that would satisfy most Freepers, if not the Putin haters among them. Putin has every incentive to settle — he can surely see that he is getting a bloody nose. But the one-word elites are deifying Zelinsky and egging him on to attempting total victory.

Nope, they were trying to get the Russian thugs out of Ukraine, while whittling down the thugs. Lavrov and the rest of the gangsters have lost leverage as their army has crumbled.

He's lucky he's a chinless freak, it'll be a nice quick firing squad instead of hanging when Putin falls.

Hey, Biden bought Ukraine fair and square…while they thought they were buying him.

LOL! You just know the owner drives around with two masks on by themselves in a Prius with a “BYE DON” and “COEXIST” bumper sticker on the back.

Biden crime family took more bribes from Russia ($3.5M) than from Ukraine ($3.0M)

If the Kerch Strait Bridge is taken out we’ll know Russia is definitely on the ropes.

The average American is dumbfounded when asked about the Minsk agreement. If you try to explain it to them, their ears slam shut.

“Ukraine apparently wants to stall for time and continue the hostilities,”

Yeah, that tends to happen when the invaders start losing and retreating.

“This could end.”

Certainly, it could end today if Russia just got the hell out of Ukraine. Go tell them that.

The big winners in an extended war will be international defense contractors.

The map is not the territory.

“If the U.S. had been invaded through Mexico 3 times in the past few centuries, with the last one resulting in a war that killed 25 million Americans, we might be paranoid about a hostile force taking control of Mexico.”

Well, if little Pootie Poot is so scared, he can always take a page from Trump’s book and build a wall on the border.

Of course that would mean he would have to settle for a permanent border and not a temporary line until he decides to invade one of his weaker neighbors yet again.

No fooling. They’re winning the war, so they’re less apt to surrender.

That seems correct to me. Negotiating position will be dictated by how the war develops. Lavrov knows this of course, but his objective is to sow confusion, and he is good at it. Think of how he took advantage of Trump’s greed and stupidity repeatedly.

sort of correct:

Russia’s position in the south is weak. A break through could threat to encircle Russian forces in Kherson and Zakarpattia Oblasts. But if those Russian forces relocate to Crimea, they could hold that line indefinitely.

In the east, it’s dicey. Russia currently controls all or almost all of Luhansk Oblast; and, Mariupol as well as the part of Donetsk Oblast they controlled before the invasion. The Russians do not control the eastern part of Donestsk.

One scenario - a compromise - is that Ukraine regains control of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts, concedes Crimea, Luhansk and the parts of Donetsk controlled by the Russia, and incorporates eastern Donetsk into Kharkiv Oblast; gains guarantee of their sovereignty from the U.S., U.K. and Turkey immediately, and from NATO eventually, and also eventually joining EU, providing no offensive military capability is stationed by foreign countries in Ukraine. Also, NATO countries remove sanctions on Russia energy, and in their place puts a special tariff on Russian energy to defray the cost of rebuilding Ukraine.

Such a compromise might not be acceptable to either party. Ukraine may be thinking it can regain control of northern Luhansk Oblast and Mariupol in Donetsk Oblast, and maybe even the breakaway part of those oblasts. (But, does anybody really think Ukraine can gain control of Crimea? I don’t think so.) So, the fighting will probably go on until these possibilities is resolved one way or the other. I next look for Ukraine to continue to advance in Kharkiv Oblast, and to probe the lines in the south.

The Russians everything out of this war. Period. Ukraine will agree to a surrender or a greater percentage of it will be under Russian control, if not all of it.

Failing to surrender and shipping more arms into Ukraine is causing a greater loss of life.

The side that doesn't want peace is Biden regime and NATO. They want to turn Ukraine into the equivalent of Palestine. We fomented a revolution that caused an eight-year civil war. We encouraged Ukraine to reject the Minsk Agreement that would have brought peace to Donbass. And, now, we're hoping to turn what will be left of Ukraine into a terrorist state that continues perpetual insurgency.

Why should they?
Russia is in retreat.
Ukraine should be restored to pre 2014!
And allowed to join NATO!
I would take Kuban from Russia too. Those people are all Ukrainian (at least formerly).

If they can “find more atrocities” they can get NATO Help to toss out Russia and take all lost lands, punish the Russian Speaking Ukrainians, and maybe add some bits of Russia! They can replace Russia as a great power! They can dominate the Black Sea. Its a good plan but one with many dangers.

interesting, thanks for posting.

the very short synopsis is that tht russians as a group are difficult to distinguish from being somewhat irrational. they are this way because of their history and their national character, which is somewhat fragmented and at odds with itself. additionally, they tend to be isolated from the outside world, so they are subseptible to autocratic rule such they now get from putin.
