Using the afternoon after church to train the militia goes back as far as the Byzantines. Only then the men trained with spears and shields or bows.

I would anticipate a rapid surge in attendance if my church would put in a shooting range and offered a little practical firearm guidance after the Sunday message. Just recently it became a “big deal” that we have armed security covering all the functions till the guy in TX put down a bad guy in the sanctuary.
