3) To have food and water you must access the territory upon which it is found.
4) To ensure access to the territory you must control it.
5) To control the territory you must exert superior force or numbers.
6) To ensure superior force or numbers you must reproduce.

That's seven right there.

I had a couple uncles who spent time in the Solomons keeping the Japanese from doing the same thing.
They said that after they stopped getting shot at, it was still a miserable place.

A base that is 6000km from China. Good luck maintaining a supply line through hostile waters in time of war.
