On Tuesday, Reuters reporters saw several hundred men registering with Ethiopian security guards outside the embassy. The guards recorded their names and asked for proof of military service...But many in Ethiopia have voiced solidarity with Russia, which has enjoyed close relations with the Horn of Africa nation since the Soviet era...A man who came out of the embassy and addressed the volunteers in Russian through an interpreter said Russia had enough forces for now, but that they would be contacted when they were needed.

Well, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is the second largest "Orthodox" church in membership in the world (second to the Russian). And that's even though they're not in communion since the Ethiopian Church is non-Chalcaedonian.

Ethiopia's a strange country. It's an ancient chrstian theocracy idealized by the Left as the black "holy land." And Haile Selassie, though a chrstian emperor, was into the Left wing "civil rights" movement up to his ears, joining with Communist dictators like Nyere, Toure, Nkrumah, Lumumba, and Michael Manley. And when he came to the States he would hang out with heretics like Adam Clayton Powell. You figure it out because I sure can't.

In "The Neutralizers," Birch Society founder Robert Welch listed Haile Selassie as a Communist dictator subservient to Moscow, and one issue of their magazine claimed that the Communists ran Ethiopia through the Church. But then another Commie (and relative) named Mengistu Haile Mariam came along and murdered him.
