I thought so too. I don’t believe Putin intends to take anything west of the river, but his move toward Kiev made Ukraine defend it with troops and weapons while Russian troops solidified their objectives.
I may be wrong, but that’s how I see it.

Putin was in the catbird seat regarding Keeyieyyev. If he took it within 72 hours like most of us thought he would do, then it woulda been a victory for him. Since he didn’t take it, he tied up forces in the north, enabling him to establish that land bridge around Mariupol to the south.
